"Being the daughter of a pack leader is the definition of a nightmare." Maya whines.
I look over at my sister who has half her body hanging off the side of the bed. Her long brown hair falls and hits the floor and her eyes peer up at me from my bed.
"Why do you say that?" I chuckle as I turn my attention to her from my phone.
"Because there's so much expected of us, but when the time comes for us to actually become a part of leadership we're always overlooked."
"I'm not following"
Maya sighs and sits back up and faces me on the bed. "We're 18. We're about to be a part of leadership and look at all the crap they're hiding from us." She whispers.
I sigh and shake my head. "Technically we don't become part of leadership till we find our mates." I point out.
Maya rolls her eyes. "That's another thing! That is so stupid. I'm still going to be me when I find my mate, why do I have to wait for him or her just to be able to know things about my pack" she questions.
I shrug my shoulders. "Just be thankful we don't do that Alpha and Luna shit." I chuckle.
Maya smiles and shakes her head. "At least with that we'd actually be told things." She shrugs and lays back down on her bed, hanging her upper half off the side.
"Not necessarily. Kai and Lilith would be alpha and Luna and whose to say they wouldn't keep things from us." I add.
"Pfft. Kai might want to keep stuff from us but you and I both know Lilith wouldn't let him." Maya adds.
"What wouldn't Lilith do?" Kai asks strolling into the bedroom with Anna on his hip.
"Smoke crack." Maya says with a sarcastic smile.
Kai rolls his eyes at her and shakes his head.
"Daddy what's crack?"
I snort and cover my mouth. Kai's eyes widen but then glare in anger at Maya who is holding a pillow to her face to hide her smile.
"You're a terrible aunt" he mutters as he begins to walk out of the room.
"Damn girl!" Anna screams over his shoulder.
"Now who taught you that!" He asks in a shrill tone.
Once Maya and I hear the front door of the cabin shut we both burst out into laughter.
"Lilith is in soooo much trouble" I say laughing.
Maya and I laugh till our faces go hot. When it finally dies down we fall back into a comfortable silence.
"Can I ask you something?" She asks suddenly.
God I hate when people ask that. Now my stomach hurts.
"Sure. What's up?" I say looking over at her. Her eyes hold a bit of hurt, and it almost looks like she regrets bringing it up.
"Did Danny say anything to you yesterday?"
My eyebrows furrow in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Maya sighs and shrugs. "I don't know. Anything about me?"
I frown at her question. "No." I state simply.
Maya sighs and turns her eyes away from me. "I think he likes you." She adds sadly.
"Maya-"
"I see the way he looks at you. You would tell me if you guys ended up as mates wouldn't you?" She asks peering back up at me. I swallow a lump in my throat.
"Wouldn't you?" She questions a little louder and sits back up on the bed to face me.
"Maya-"
"He is isn't he." She says as more than a statement than a question. A small tear escapes her eye and she bolts.
"Maya!" I call out as she runs for the front door.
I chase her out but I'm not quick enough. She immediately shifts into her wolf form and takes off into the brush.
"What happened?" My mom calls from the kitchen.
I walk back through the open door and look my mom in the eye before bursting into tears.
"Baby what's wrong?" She asks as she rushes to me and engulfs me into a hug. I clutch onto her tightly. I hear footsteps shuffling around the cabin and I know most of my family has walked out of their rooms to take in what was going on.
When I could sense Daniel I held my mom even tighter. My back was to everyone in the room and I didn't want to turn and face them.
My mom removes one hand from my back and I feel her move in my tight grasp. When her arm wraps back around me I hear footsteps retreading and the front door open and close again. She must've told everyone to leave.
"What happened my love?" My mom asks as she pulls away from me. Her arms rest on my shoulders, and I now see my dad was standing behind her with a worried expression.
I wipe my eyes and shake my head. "I lied." I say before another choked sob escapes my lips. "I found my mate at our party." I say looking at the both of them. Hurt and confusion written all over their faces.
"It's Daniel." I say dropping my head to look at the ground. "I didn't say anything because I didn't want to hurt Maya. She liked him so much."
When I look up my mom has her arms crossed over her chest. She looks over her shoulder at my dad and they both share a frown.
"What?" I ask.
"We always worried this would happen." She shrugs. "Same thing happened to Anthony and Luke. Only Diana and Anthony didn't date." She adds.
"Why does this happen?"
"There's not really a definite answer. Some people thought it was because identical twins look so much like each other it confused the bond, but Anthony and Luke are fraternal so maybe it runs a little deeper." My dad shrugs.
I hadn't even thought about that when Anthony told me yesterday. Him and Luke are fraternal twins, and yet Diana still thought Anthony could've been her mate.
"I wish you had told us sooner Angie. Why did you keep it from us?" My mom asks sadly.
I can't help but scoff at her question. She gives me a questioning look and I shake my head.
"I could ask the two of you the same question." I state.
Both of my parents give me a confused expression before realization settles on their features. Of course they don't deny anything, but I can tell I've rendered them speechless.
I turn on my heels and walk back to the room I shared with Maya. Sitting on the edge of my bed was Daniel.
"What are you doing in here?" I ask as I shut the door behind me.
"I was worried." He says standing up and walking to me. I cross my arms over my chest and step back. He looks hurt by this but I keep my stance.
"I'm guessing you told her?" He states.
I nod my head but don't say anything.
"Angie I'm sorry..." he starts.
"Look I just want to be alone. Can we do this later?" I say not looking in his eyes. I wanted nothing more than to let him comfort me, but I didn't want to risk Maya coming back and seeing. I'd just be rubbing salt in the wound.
"Don't push me away."
"Oh look who's talking." I say with a bitter laugh.
Daniel stares at me with confusion.
"You never told me what was wrong the other night. When you were anxious."
Daniel sighs. "I told you I just get stressed easy."
"Okay but about what? It didn't feel like stress it felt like fear and anxiety." I state angrily.
Daniel clenches his jaw and turns away from me.
"Exactly. Can you please go now?" I say stepping aside for him to reach the door.
He doesn't say anything, he walks out the door without another word or look towards me.
The second the door shuts I lay back down on my bed and face the wall.
Everything was moving too fast for me. I turned 18 a week ago and my pack is in danger, my mate is my sisters ex and now my sister can't stand me. I hated confrontation and always avoided it, now I'm right in the middle of it all.
This week was going to fucking suck.
