Jane's POV

It's been about a month and a half since I met David at the Red Sox game. I invited him over for dinner the other day so he could meet my pride and joy, Emma. From the second he walked through the door, Emma loved him. She was showing David all of her toys and barbies and ponies, making him play along with her. I was so excited to find out that he got along so well with my little girl, because now I know he's just about perfect. The only thing I need to do now is introduce him to the rest of my crazy, hectic family.

At work, a lot of things have changed within the past month. Because of Maura's pregnancy, we had to change many things around. For starters, Lexi has to do most of the on-hand things at the crime scenes, so Maura makes sure nothing causes harm to the baby. Also, because Maura is leaving in two months, Pike is starting to ease his way back in to the autopsy room. "Gee, if you keep popping babies out, Doctor Isles, I'll have to take your job," he would say to her, making me want to hurt someone.

The nerve that that man has is unbelievable. I don't understand what he has against Maura and if he does have a crush on her, this is one hell of a way of showing it.

Today at work, Maura stayed in her office doing research while Lexi was in the crime lab performing all of the tests. Whenever I had a break, I would go downstairs and keep Maura company. "How are you feeling?" I asked her as I sat down on her uncomfortable chair.

"Fine. Cramping a little and have heartburn, but I'm fine," she said as she smiled.

"Hm. The joys of pregnancy, huh?" I joked.

"Yeah, and this baby has been the most active he's ever been today."

"Oh, really? Is he moving right now?"

She paused and felt around her stomach before answering me. "No, he just stopped, but he will probably start back up again soon."

I smiled just as she inched her chair back and called me over, "Oh! He's kicking again!"

I ran over as fast as I could. She grabbed my hands and guided my to where the baby was kicking. I felt many pulsing kicks and punches within a few seconds. Emma has never been this active, thank God. After a strong and powerful kick, Maura gasped, "Ouch!"

Looking up at her, I laughed and said, "I'd say that's a field goal."

"Ha, maybe Bret does have his hockey player after all," she replied.

I closed my eyes in annoyance as I laughed and told her, "Football, Maura."

"Oh," she chuckled.

"Aw, Maura. I'm so happy for you!"

"I'm so excited. We are going to be an actual family!"

"Well what were you before?" I asked her, laughing.

"Well, I meant a full family. Before, it was just Bret, Elizabeth, and me. Now, it's going to be the four of us. I don't know, I can't exactly explain it."

I chuckled, "I know what you mean. You are a growing family now."

"That's exactly what I meant to say," she told me as she spun her chair around and slid herself back to her desk. I made my way back to her couch until she started coughing and gasping for air. When I turned around to look at her, she was leaning over her chair on the side, trying to take deep breaths.

"Maur, are you alright?!" I asked her. When I went over to her, she had her palm flattened along her chest, with her eyes closed, breathing very abnormally. Not knowing what to do, I screamed, hollered, yelled for Lexi. I screamed as loud as my lungs would let me; if Lexi didn't hear me, I would be shocked.

Before I knew it, Lexi came running in. "Jane, what is it?!" she asked before she saw Maura losing her breath. "Maura, are you alright?" she questioned as she made her way over to her.

I could tell Maura was beginning to panic as she mumbled to Lexi, "Can't..."

Tears were flowing from Maura's eyes. I couldn't tell if they were from her being scared, or just from her shortness of breath. Or both.

"Okay, Maura, I need you to try to remain calm and not panic," Lexi calmly told her.

Nodding, Maura tried her best to cooperate. She was still leaning over the side of her chair, not being able to sit up straight, as Lexi was trying to make her do. "I need you to try to sit up, Maura. To try to open your airway," Lexi spoke.

I didn't understand what the hell was going on and the fact that Lexi was telling Maura what to do made me feel even worse. Maura is a genius- she of all people should know what is going on.

"Jane, call an ambulance," Lexi directed me.

"An ambulance? Is it that bad?" I asked her as I took my cell phone out and began to dial.

"Her airway is getting cut off. She can't breath."

When I looked over at Maura, she was looking directly at me, watching me call the hospital. She was pale blue in the face and her eyes were faded. On the phone with the hospital, I was trying to explain to them her condition. "She looks like a corpse," I mentioned. It was the only other way I could describe to them what she looked like.

Lexi and I helped Maura upstairs and impatiently waited for the ambulance. "It'll be okay, Maura..." I whispered to her, trying to calm her as well as myself. Looking over at Lexi, I said, "Shit. Call Bret!"

Doing as I said, Lexi took my phone and called Bret as I held onto Maura. Hearing the sirens, I helped Maura up and walked her out the door where the paramedics greeted us with a stretcher and an oxygen mask. "Hold onto it," I told her as if she didn't know what to do.

When she hung up with Bret, Lexi handed me my phone and I hopped in the back of the ambulance with Maura. "Stay here. I'll call you when we get there," I told Lexi before the back doors shut and we drove away.

Maura began coughing again as she closed her eyes and let out more tears. "Don't worry, Maur. Everything will be okay, I promise," I reassured her for the second time.

Within two minutes, we arrived at the hospital and they immediately rolled Maura into a room. I ran behind them until a nurse stopped me and told me to wait in the waiting room. Sitting down, I took out my phone and saw that I had three missed calls and seven missed text messages. Before I could call anyone back, a doctor came out to greet me.

"Are you here with Doctor Isles?" he asked as he walked up to me. I stood up and shook his hand as he told me, "I am Doctor Simmons. Based on Doctor Isles' condition, we will need to perform an emergency c-section."

"What? But she's only about thirty weeks along!" I spoke.

"Yes, we are aware, but with her lack of oxygen, the baby is suffering as well. When you're pregnant, your body makes sure everything gets sent to the baby before you, to make sure nothing happens to it. So with all of her oxygen being sent to the baby, we need to deliver her now in order to save her."

"Save her?" I questioned, still not knowing what is going on.

"My apologies. To prevent any danger to Doctor Isles."

"Okay, well do whatever you need!" I hollered at him before sitting back down.

Bret soon came running into the hospital and over to me. "What the hell happened?" he asked.

"I have no idea. We were feeling the baby kick and were laughing one minute, then she was coughing and couldn't breathe the next," I tried to explain.

"Fuck," he mumbled. "Why do all the bad things happen to her?"

"I have no idea. Oh my God, I almost forgot to tell you. The doctor came out and told me that they have to do an emergency c-section."

"What?! She's only thirty weeks! The baby isn't ready!"

"Bret, they need to get the baby out now. He said something about preventing any harm from her."

He began to pace around the room before the doctor came back out. "Ms Rizzoli?" he called for me. Bret and I immediately walked over to him. "How is she? And the baby?" I asked.

"Someone is working on Doctor Isles right now, as we speak. The baby is fine, he is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit right now. I can direct you two if you would like to see him," the doctor told us.

"Yes please," Bret said before the doctor began to lead us to where the baby was. As we approached this window, the doctor pointed out the crib right in front of us with a sign labeled as Isles on it. He was pale, light pink, and was very tiny- the most precious child ever. He had Maura's nose and Bret's chin; a perfect mixture of them both. There were tiny strands of blonde hair poking out from the beanie hat he was wearing.

I stood there and counted each finger and each toe; there were twenty of them. He was also hooked up on oxygen tanks and heart monitors. It's just a shame that Maura can't see him right now. He looks so peaceful.

It is a crazy feeling knowing that just two hours ago, this little baby was kicking my hand in Maura's office. And now, he's laying right in front of me. Taking out my phone, I quickly took a picture of him to show Maura for whenever she feels better. I turned to look at Bret and noticed that he was just staring at his son, as if he just saw God.

"There's your little football player, Bret," I whispered to him as I rubbed his shoulder.

His eyes began to tear up as he replied, "Quarterback. He's beautiful."
