"Everything looks the same Ms.Hartfield, I'm terribly sorry but it looks like your time with Alexander is only getting shorter and the chemo is only going to weaken him in the long run. Your best bet is to bring him home for Christmas and try to make him as comfortable as possible. Again, I'm very sorry this is happening to your son."
"Thank you Doctor Mason, please keep Alex from knowing as usual… It's for the best I keep this from him, I hate to know what will happen if he stops fighting. He's so strong, I'm very proud of him but I… I want my baby healthy again." The woman in the hall starts visibly tearing up before quickly wiping her eyes, nodding at the doctor and opening her son's door to his room.
She turns around to shut it and puts on a fake smile before turning back around and walking to her son's hospital bed and sitting down beside it in a chair.
A very sleep deprived looking little boy turns his head to face the woman and says in a voice that is not too different from a toad's croak, "Do we have any good news, mom? Will I be leaving here soon?"
She reaches out and grabs her son's hand and squeezes it gently and with a smile she says to her son, "Of course baby, the doctor said you might be getting released as soon as tomorrow! That's why your mama needs to go fix up your bedroom so when you come home you can get settled in fast without having to worry much about anything."
The little boy smiles at his mama and exclaims, "I really get to come home!? Wow, this is the best news ever! I can't wait to tell my friends that-." Before he can finish he breaks off into a coughing fit in which the mom jumps out of the chair, grabs the trash can and holds it while her son empties out his stomach.
She places it on the floor beside her chair and his bed and pushes his hair out of his face and kisses him on the forehead.
"Lay here and rest baby and try not to talk much, I'm gonna go tell the nurses to keep an eye and ear out for you while I go fix your room. I'll be back tomorrow, I love you, Alex and sweet dreams my baby boy."
The little boy lays back on the bed, closes his eyes and says "Good night mama, I love you."
The woman left the room and after having a word with the nurses about his coughing fit she headed home.
Once the woman is home she walks into her son's old room and collapses on the floor and starts sobbing into her hands.
"My baby… I don't want to lose my baby… On Christmas… Not my baby…"
After about an hour of crying she quickly straightens up in his room and ends up falling asleep on his old bed.
Her phone ringing wakes her up at 4:30 a.m.. She sits up, grabs it from beside her in the bed and answers it quickly after seeing the caller I.D..
"Doctor Mason, is something wrong with Alex? Is he okay? Please tell me he's okay, tell me it's not what I think it is." She starts crying into the phone and clutches her chest.
"Ms. Hartfield, Alex is okay… Better than okay actually, he's finally cured from cancer after 2 long years… We misread the test results earlier and it turns out your son is saved by what me and the nurses are calling "a Christmas miracle" and I'd advise you to come up here quickly so once we finish our second round of checking you can sign his release forms but he will have to come up here once every week to keep a check on him if you don't mind.
At this point the woman was smiling and now crying happy tears, "Oh my, thank you so much Doctor Mason… Thank you so much I can't believe this! A Christmas miracle! I'm on my way right now."
She gets up, slides on her shoes, grabs her keys and starts to head out the door but before she can she hears, "Oh yeah, you might want to get your money ready because Alex has his Christmas list ready and it's quite long."
She grins and says to him, "Will do, Doctor Mason" and hangs up and heads out the door to pick up Alex, her son who is cancer free now thanks to a Christmas miracle.
