(y/n)'s POV
I might curse out the universe on a daily basis (like when I wake up with a horrible kink in my neck, or when my bag strap gets stuck on a door handle, or when I trip over my feet and run into somebody). But I thought I might have to stop when the universe's supposed agenda against me led me to trip over my feet and run into a certain Dr. Spencer Reid on an average Thursday near the middle of October.
I was working my way across campus, staring at the suspicious clouds hanging ominously above the surrounding brick buildings, when I pulled out the new book I'd been annotating. I knew I was early for the lecture I was planning to attend that evening, and came prepared.
Finding the page I had last read (I'm a dog-earer, sue me, I don't care) I quickly lost notice of my surroundings except for the crunch of gravel under my feet, the sound of rustling leaves occasionally breaking up the silence.
It was getting into the evening, and there were few students on campus to watch out for. Or at least, so I thought, as I suddenly found myself walking straight into the warm chest of an unsuspecting male.
I cursed under my breath as a pair of long fingers on my biceps steadied me, and I quickly looked up into the face of one of the most attractive men I'd ever seen. Scruffy longish brown hair, brown eyes, sharp jaw, a pair of glasses perched on his perfect nose.
"Hey there," the man chuckled, "So sorry, I wasn't looking where I was—"
"No no!" I cut him off as I took a step back from him and fixed my bag strap (and tried to gather my bearings, which were now scattered around me along with my dignity),
"My fault completely! I was reading this new book I started and couldn't put down."
The man, who I noticed was a good half foot taller than me and was wearing a delightful sweater vest and collared shirt combo (that I found wayyy too attractive), looked appeased by my answer. Laughing before saying,
"Oh god, that's something I can understand completely, what book had you so distracted?" He tacked on as an afterthought with a bit of a blush, "If you don't mind me asking."
I laughed as well, shaking off my embarrassment as I realized the book was no longer in my hands but lying on the ground a couple feet behind me. I backtracked a couple steps and swiped it up before holding it out for him to read.
"Swann's Way? I love that book!" The still unidentified man exclaimed as he reached for it. I gave it to him,
"Really? I haven't met a lot of people who've read it. This is a new translation I got that I'm currently comparing to the original French I have. Proust's poeticism and prose is often so complicated and so beautiful I thought it'd be fun to contrast them." I blushed a little as I realized I'd begun to ramble, but he was looking at me a little awed.
"You've read it in the original French? That's awesome! I grew up with my mother reading it to me, but I have yet to learn enough French to read the original."
"That's still so nice!" I responded, happy that this strange attractive man was trying to converse with me. "French authors have some of my favorite literature. You're lucky to have grown up with it."
I nervously ran my fingers through my hair and his eyes followed the movement, dropping back to my gaze, "I'm Dr. Spencer Reid, by the way." He cleared his throat, "In case you wondered who you were talking to. I mean, just Spencer is fine, you don't have to call me Doctor by any means."
