Character development
So there's something I see often in some books that doesn't quite sit well with me. As a reader one of the greatest elements of a story we can enjoy, are of course the characters. Now, no matter the genre, we should see a clear sense of this characters beginning and end.
This may be an unpopular opinion but a character shouldn't always make the perfect decision, or have a calm cool and collected attitude or response all the time. Sure you want to give your characters strong points but flaws are important too. And I'm not talking Acne or nail biting.
You should have a clear sense of who your character is and who they can become but it's not always forged on a perfect path. Heroes don't always make perfectly sound, or conveniently effective decisions.
Even if we cringe at the main characters completely unwarranted or over the top reaction, these circumstances may be accurate, but sometimes they aren't. You shouldn't let the conflict of your story between characters be consistently based on misunderstandings or miscommunication. As our characters grow so should their behaviors and actions. Don't try to have a Mary Sue or a cookie cutter MC. It's easier to relate to a character who is just like you and me than some picture perfect cardboard cut out.
