I picked this song, In The End by Black Veil Brides as the main theme for this entire story. It inspired most of what's going to be in the book, so enjoy.

(Sky'sPOV)

I finally placed the last box of my belongings into the apartment I recently bought a few weeks ago. Breathing out a tired breath, I examined my apartment, MY apartment and couldn't help but feel happy that I finally have a place to call my own. Sure, while I was still in University working on obtaining my masters degree in Biology and Animal Science, it was an interesting experience being away from my guardian to live with my friend Samantha, but I still had to call every few days to report on my well being or else she would come barging into our apartment unannounced in the middle of the week, wrought with worry, assuming something awful had happened to me. Well, not anymore.

Right after graduation, I made my decision to move all the way to San Francisco, a place I was interested in residing while I was in my junior year of college. It's a beach city, with reasonable temperatures that never reach scorching hot or freezing. This city offers a variety of cultures to explore and try without having to travel outside of the country, such as restaurants, clothing stores, furniture, theater, and such. But the best part of this city? The welcoming acceptance of individuality and identity usually stigmatized by mass media. San Francisco is the place where you can be openly gay and feel safe in your own skin. As a single, gay man starting out his life all on his own, this is the perfect place for me. Well, except for the expensive living expenses. The prices here are crazy!

I made my way over to the huge window that overlooked the busy streets down below. A huge variety of people strolled along the concrete pavement, heading into a wide range of stores, restaurants, and businesses. Little children skipped along the streets, parents yelling at them to slow down, businessmen in suits speed walking down the blocks, and teenagers hanging out in their personal groups. There's even a mans trutting in a stunning wedding dress, winking at random people. It's such a happy place here, full of life where you can be free to be who you want to be.

My phone suddenly rang from the pocket of my jeans. I slipped it outwithout checking caller ID and answered. "Hello?"

"Baby cakes! How's San Francisco?" asked my friend Samantha.

My lips instantly lifted to a grin. "It's great. I've only been here for almost a day and already I had seen things you would never find in Chicago. Heck, I was even asked out by one of the moving guy. I assumed he thought I was a woman and told him I'm a guy, but he surprised me by giving me a suggestive wink and said he didn't mind. Gosh, people are so open here. I love it!"

Samantha laughed. "That's not surprising. You are beautiful, more so than most women and you have this innocent, angelic appearance that instinctively lures everyone to you, including me."

"Really?"I asked as I began to unpack my things. Thank goodness I remembered to label the boxes, otherwise I'll be scavenger hunting my way through the next few days.

Samantha sighed in frustration. "How many times do I have to tell you that you're outlandishly beautiful? Hell, did you NOT notice all of those guys checking you out on campus during grad school? And undergrad?"

Huh. "I thought they were checking you out. You are hot, you know."

I can practically hear Samantha roll her eyes. "Oh puh-lease. Those guys are looking at YOU. Don't try to downgrade yourself like you always do."

I frowned. "Sorry."

I heard Samantha mutter something, most likely a profanity, before I heard a smack, followed by the sounds of something crashing onto the ground. I winced. She can be so violent sometimes. "Don't apologize Sky. I'm just mad that you would think so lowly of yourself. Please believe me when I say that you are more beautiful than most of the female and male population on this planet. You're also very intelligent, kind, a great cook, and you are a lover, not a hater. You defend your friends and always try to help those in need. You're a great person, so don't start doubting yourself or else I will hunt you down and slap some sense into you."

She would do that, no doubt. I sighed, "Okay. I'll try my best."

Samantha huffed, "That's all I ask. Now go finish unpacking. I wish I could help you move in, but I'm stuck here in Chicago. I just can't move away from this place."

I smirked. "Because of your obsession of pizza."

Samantha laughed. "Of course. I can't leave my most greatest love. But I will come visit you soon okay?"

I smiled. "Okay. Love you Sammy."

"Love you too Sky."

We hung up at the same time. Exhaustion settled onto my weary body. I slowly made my way to the couch the flirty moving guy and his co-worker helped set up in the right position and flopped down on the plush cushions. I can't believe I'm here, in San Francisco, the place I always dreamed of starting a new life ever since my college days. Maybe now I can finally spread my wings and live the life I've always wanted. To be free.

This week is going to be hectic. First, I need to unpack my stuff and settle into my new place. Maybe later I'll check out the neighborhood, order take out for dinner. Might as well figure out where everything is in this city and not bumble my way through this vast concrete jungle of a city. Oh yeah, and I need to find a job soon or else my bank account won't last another few months.

I rolled my body onto my back and stared at the azure sky up above, displayed by the window. An airplane slowly flew passed as life continued to bustle all around me. Maybe I can finally live the life I always dreamed of having. To find peace in my life.

My eyelids grew heavy as sleep descended upon my weary conscious. As my mind crept to the land of dreams, my final thoughts sprang hopeful of new beginnings, of continuing my life the way I choose without disruptions of certain entities that I left in my past. The past is the past, and I hope to god that it stays that way.
