 Chapter 2______________________________________________________________________

"Everyone, in your seats," said Mrs. Montag, Rose's biology teacher, "and open your books to page-" Suddenly, she was interrupted by the sound of the fire alarm.

"Fire drill," she said glumly, and motioned towards the door. Everyone obediently lined up and walked down the halls, silently whispering to one another. They usually gathered in the nearby building that was the school's property but really had no purpose, so they just used it as a meeting place. Rose goes to Mount Eastwood High, a small, low-class school that didn't own much. But Rose was grateful. Well, kind of. Just before they left, Rose really had to go to the bathroom. Knowing the meeting room didn't have any restrooms, Rose went to use the restroom in the school. She snuck in silently. She listened to the echoes of her footsteps...it was kind of scary. After she finished, she went out to wash her hands, when she started not to feel so good. She smelled smoke.

There really is a fire?! she thought frantically. Scared, Rose ran out of the bathroom and to the exit doors, but by then, she started seeing smoke. And fire. Rose tried not to panic, but it was too hard. Tears stroked her cheek but she wiped them off angrily. She looked around for a fire extinguisher, but there was none. Stupid poor school. Silently, she prayed to herself as she tried to think up a way out. The fire started spreading towards her. Slashing off tears like a sprinkler, Rose ran down the other end of the hall. She turned around the corner and practically fell down the steps. But when she reached the bottom, she was cornered by another fire! Rose turned around to run, but suddenly she felt drowsy. Really drowsy. Then she blacked out.
