Read Between The Lines

Part 6

Niall’s POV

‘Li...Li’ I yelled.  ‘STOP! I think I saw something’.

‘Alleyway girl?’ Harry Louis and Zayn all yelled at me at the same time. The way the lads are so in sync almost made me chuckle, but I stopped myself as I registered the image that just flew past the blackened out windows. The car screeched to a stop as Liam applied pressure to the brakes, and almost as soon as it grinded to a halt the 5 of us were out of the car like a shot.

‘AHHHHHH’

The sound of a scream made us all stop dead in our tracks. Simultaneously we all whipped our heads round looking for the source of the noise. I found it first and nudged the lads as I saw a group of people surrounding something, maybe somebody. Then I watched in horror as I saw a flash of blood and Giggles of laughter immediately following. I almost instantly came to the conclusion that the group of people were girls, and by the looks of them they were the ones that caused the blood. I looked at the boys in shock how could anyone do something like that?

That’s another human being you’re hurting! I felt like screaming at them. Looking at Liam I saw the tears begin to well up in his eyes. Of course…  I forgot about Liam. He used to be bullied, so it must be killing him seeing someone else being put through exactly what he was for years of his life. Shooting him a reassuring glance I see Louis begin to take in the bully’s appearances and almost instantly afterwards I hear him come to the conclusion that they are ‘sluts with a capital S’. I began to crack up laughing; knowing that now I’d started it was going to be very difficult to stop. 

Putting their hands over my mouth the boys pulled me into the shadows of the setting sun before the sluts could see us or recognise us. Suddenly they began walking towards us and instinctively, we all pulled our hoods up shielding our faces from view. Thankfully they just walked past us.  

‘Quick’ Liam said as soon as the bullies were out of earshot.

‘We have to go help them’ We could all see the longing in his eyes and realised how much he was probably hurting right now. I mean it’s not like you could blame him. Seeing what happened to him repeatedly day after day, happen to another person can’t be easy. It sucks enough looking at it let alone actually having it happen to you. Liam coughed and moved his eyes to the ground awkwardly, understandably not wanting all the attention on him.

We turned around and started walking towards where the scream came from. We all had our hoods up and started scanning the area looking for some form of life.

‘There’ Harry spoke softly and pointed a little way down the road where I just caught a glimpse of a hoodie as somebody rounded a corner. We immediately started following; me and Liam starting to run in our urgency to help the victim. Before we could get more than a few paces running Zayn called us back.

‘Boys, let’s match their pace, if we start running who knows what they will do. We need to be careful what we do we have to help this person whoever they are, they need us. We need to show them they aren’t alone and we are here to help’. Zayn took a deep breath and we all looked at him.

‘WOW ZAYNNNNIIEEE that was deep man’ Louis screeched in a girly voice, and that was all it took to set us off laughing. We continued walking and as we got to the corner and began to walk around onto the next road we saw a shadow and something flying behind the victim. I looked at the rest of the lads confused for a few seconds and then Liam realised what they were doing. ‘She’s taking her hoodie off’ he said noticing that the victim’s long hair was flowing behind them and it was in fact a girl. ‘WHAT?! Why has she taken her hoodie off? It’s freezing!’ me and Louis shouted at the same time.

She turned around.

Oh shit. I became shocked that she could hear us from that far away, or did she just sense us there? But suddenly it occurred to me that she looked familiar, way too familiar but I just couldn’t put my name on it. Who the hell was she?

Without warning she burst out ‘FINE’ at the top of her lungs ‘come and get me! Whilst there’s still something left to get’ letting the words sink in it suddenly came to me, I knew who this girl was….

This was alleyway girl.

But before I had time to discuss my realisation with the lads she started shouting at us all again ‘it’s not like you haven’t hurt me enough already, is it not enough for you all to physically hurt me, do you really have to emotionally drain me?’ My mouth dropped open.

Without realising, she prevented me from saying anything by suddenly running forward. Us boys continued to watch in horror as she unravelled her arm and it was then that my heart almost stopped.

Her… her arm. That’s awful I wouldn’t wish that pain on my worst enemy.

Looking at the boys I could just tell that the shock in their faces is mirrored on my own. ‘What…’ I started to choke out but before I could get any further we heard a thud and the alleyway girl was on the floor. Just like that.

Like she’d just given up on us… on herself. How could she just give up she needs to be strong to get better, we must help her.

 Almost before the thought entered my mind I started running towards her and I could sense the lads were right behind me.

Crouching down straight in front of her I looked down at her arm. Arranging my features in a caring look I hid away all my feelings of worry and confusion about this girl and forced a smile.

Sensing we were surrounding her now she looked up and met my eyes. She looked confused about why we cared. Like she didn’t know why we were bothering with her.

Was her life really that bad that nobody cared? Nobody wanted to know?
