"Demigods usually don't get to live happy lives". You've probably heard that phrase already by now, so I will give you a new one. "Children of Hades don't get to live happy lives." Now that's one that I have heard all my life. So much so that I started to wonder why? Aren't we half-bloods like all the rest of them? If they have a chance at happiness then shouldn't we also have it?

However it seems that the entire world was against that idea. It seems the entire world is set on making us suffer, for no more reason than that we were born from shadows, and apparently that's where we should stay. But that is not what we want, and since the first time I heard people say those things to me I was set on proving them wrong.

This is my story and I am the hand behind the pen of my own fate. I am the last Daughter of Hades, and this is the story of how I grabbed the destiny that was set on me, and threw it back in all of the gods' face.

At first, all I could remember was water. I remember water all around me, water going up my nose and into my lungs, water burning my eyes. Water dominated my entire existence until I woke up at a shore, the only sounds I was able to hear were the waves splashing against the sand somewhere nearby and the beating of wings. The latter, I realized, belonged a flying shadow, gliding over me. For an instant I imagined that that figure was an angel, and that I was dead, though everything hurted too much for this to be death. That was only for an instant though, as the figure approached and I realized I couldn't be more wrong. The shadow belonged to anything but an angel. In fact, as I saw its horrendous face and talons I wondered whether it might be a demon. Not that I could do anything, as I was too weak and could only hang there limply as the creature picked me up, its talons digging lightly at my sides sending spikes of pain all over my mid section.

My entire body felt numb and yet like it was on fire at the same time. I was so tired. My mouth was full of water and sand, and my eyes burned from the salt. My eyelids were too heavy for me to keep them open and when I felt my body once again be submerged in a liquid, I gave up on hanging on, and let whatever this water was wash over me.

When I woke up one more time my memory was even more jumbled than before. Before it seemed as if I was just too tired to remember much, but now it felt as if there were physical holes in my memory.

Where am I? I wondered. My body still felt sore but now I couldn't exactly remember why.

The first thought that came back to me was water again. However water had a purpose this time. Water took the forms of waves crashing into me over and over again. With that came the memory of determination to stay alive. More emotion into that thought than should be possible for an eight year old. Those thoughts were quickly followed by flashes of some memories, almost as if they were mental pictures that were getting lost too quickly. I saw flashes of a house, and some people. An older woman with two kids, a girl and a boy, looked at me. They all looked so familiar but I couldn't exactly place why.

However, just the image of those strangers was enough to clear my mind a bit, and I took a look at my surroundings for the first time. I can't remember how I ended up here but it seemed like I was in a loud room, bustling with people and other sounds coming from the bright machines all around us. A guy dressed as a waiter approached me and offered me something that looked like a flower. In a trance I grabbed one and bit into it. I knew I did something wrong the moment the flower went into my mouth, but it was too late. Once again my mind was blank, but this time it felt like a blanket had been thrown over all my senses.

What was I thinking about just a minute ago? I couldn't remember.

In fact, I realized, I could barely remember my own name.
