The loud buzz of the television set on my bedside table awoke me from my nightmares. Mayor Dallas appeared on the screen and demanded that all of the citizens in my district report to the town square for the annual reaping. I lazily rolled out of my bed and tucked the sheets underneath the pillows in an attempt at making my maid's job easier. I pulled on my normal luxurious clothing, being sure to comb all of my hairs into perfect formation.

I skipped breakfast that morning and went straight to the square, standing with the other 17 year old boys. I was quite early, but I could make out the face of my best friend Daisy Rue. I smiled and waved, and she just tilted her head downward. I raised my eyebrows and motioned for her to come over to me, although it was not allowed.

"What do you want?" She mumbled, visibly aggravated.
I ruffled her hair and playfully said, "I just wanted to say good luck." She looked up at me and giggled.
"And may the odds..."
"Be ever in your favor."

She returned to the girls side of the square and a peacekeeper eyed us in a threatening manner. He wouldnt lay a hand on me. I am the only son of Roman Silver, a Victor's son. Although it isn't allowed, I have been training for the games to volunteer when I am 18 years old, next year. The District 10 escort walked onstage where the bowls of names stood. I wasnt worried, my name was only in there 5 times.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the escort said in her ridiculous capital accent. "May I present to you the 25th Hunger Games. And for the female tribute we have," she dipped her hand into the bowl and read a name out carefully, "Betty Dallas."

My eyes widened as the name was called. Betty Dallas, Daisy Rue's sister. I held my breath as the next words that I heard changed my life forever.

"I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE!" Daisy Rue screamed all too loud. Everyone turned to face her. Daisy walked onstage crying hysterically as she pushed her sister back into the crowd. My breathing got heavier as Daisy looked out at me.

The escort dipped her hand into the bowl and read a name, a name which I didn't even hear over the pounding in my ears. Before I could think I shouted, "I volunteer!"

Right then I swore to protect my dear Daisy Rue at all costs and to return her home.
