Mary continued to drive as Darren did his best to sneak his phone out of his pocket. While trying to dial the police, he was caught off guard when the woman suddenly veered to the left, causing him to slam against his door and drop the cell between the seats.

Hurriedly he tried to retrieve it, but his hand wouldn't fit.

"It's pointless." Mary finally spoke as they rounded another corner, leaving Parkwood and entering the forest. "There's no reception here, so even if you called, it wouldn't go through."

Darren sat back up and nervously glanced outside. "You've done this before..."

They were following a barely used dirt road. The path was so narrow that it was only able to fit one car, and the trees that aligned it grew tall, reaching high overhead and blocking out the sky.

The woman slowed the car down just a little. "Once or twice."

"And what about Gerrit?" He asked, trying his best to remain calm. "Is he going to meet us out here?"

Mary shook her head with an amused grin. "Sweetheart, Gerrit has no idea."

"You mean, he's not helping you with this?"

"And what do you mean by 'this'?"

He realized she was playing games, most likely to pass the time until they arrived at whatever destination she was aiming for. He might as well put it all on the table and get it over with. "I mean the kidnappings, Sophie, and Liam's murder." He noticed how her expression turned cold at the Alpha's name, so he decided to start with that. "How could you kill your own mate?"

She sighed heavily, as though what she were about to say was a great burden. "You remember how Liam and I met, don't you? I brought it up your first night here." She quickly glanced his way. "We bonded, and I tried to hide from him. Then he tracked me down. That's where the truth ends though, because he didn't 'convince' me to stay with him. He more...forced me. And unfortunately he made a good show of it. He was the Alpha and my family was sooo excited, but when I told them I didn't want to be with him, they took his side. When he showed up at my door, they dragged me out of my room and handed me over like some sacrificial lamb."

Mary gripped the steering wheel tighter. "My own family didn't care about what I wanted, and even after I was married, they refused to believe I was unhappy. They accused me of not giving him a chance, so I tried, oh I tried, and when Gerrit was born, I thought I could finally be happy like everyone wanted. But no...That boy was just as obsessed with Liam as the rest of the damned pack was."

Darren hadn't quite given up on his phone and was still trying to sneak his hand between the seats. Unfortunately the buckle was in the way, so he tried to unclasp it. However, no matter how much he pushed the button, the buckled wouldn't release.

"And you know the worst part? We had a perfectly good son, with perfect grades, yet Liam bought some kid from another pack because the brat had stronger powers."

"Wait, what are you talking about? Liam bought a kid?" Darren stared at her in disbelief.

"Jasper. Didn't you find it odd that he never visited his family? It's because they're not from here. They sold him to Liam while he was on a business trip. He recognized Jasper's abilities and snatched him up before the other Alpha even knew what he was losing. That's how it works Darren. These Alphas just buy and sell their pack members while brainwashing them to believe they're being protected, when really we're just trade goods."

"That...That can't be..." Despite the guy being a total asshole in Darren's opinion, he just couldn't believe that Liam was actively trafficking kids.
