Slowly pushing the scratchy covers from her body, Lexie got up quietly making as little noise as possible. If she woke up the rest of the family she would not only get in trouble but also a world of pain. She looked out of her bedroom window and sighed. Lexie wondered what it would be like to be allowed to leave the house. The sun was shining bright and the rays lit up her dark, damp, and dirty room.

The room she was in was small, but big enough to where she had enough room to move around in. The only things in her room were a broken mirror, a dresser, and a bed. It was all that she was given and in all honesty, all that could fit in her small room. There was one window, and it was the only thing she loved about the house she was staying in. It was the sight of the forest behind it.

Being thrown into foster care was never a grand opportunity. Lexie had been in foster care all her life and no one had ever wanted to adopt her. She didn’t know what it was about her that made her unlovable, but each possible family always found that flaw and threw her away. Now, she was getting too old for most families to want to adopt her. Lexie knew nothing of her real family, or if she ever had one. She often stayed awake at night wondering why they gave her up, and if they were alive and looking for their daughter or if they had died and she was truly alone.

Her dreams were the one thing that kept her going. In her dreams, Lexie had a full family. She had a perfect pair of parents that loved her. They never yelled at her, hurt her, or locked her in her room. Lexie had siblings who played with her and always shared their toys. They were magical and they shone like angels, but at the end of each dream they faded away. They were always so close, almost close enough to touch, but as soon as she tried they were so far away and soon gone.

Those dreams came on the good nights. The nights were she woke up and wanted to cry. Lexie’s nightmares soon became the main event on every other night. They stared out like her perfect dream, but when she approached her family, their faces turned into disgusted scowls. They hated what they saw in her. It hurt every time because she knew that she was probably given away and that she wasn’t good enough for a real family.

Opening her door as quickly and noiselessly as possible, Lexie descended down the stairs to start breakfast. She knew that if she made breakfast too late for her foster family then the bruises covering her body would only get worse. Her bruises from the last beating still throbbed and ached but in the end it didn’t matter.

Lexie was used to the rules of this foster house because they were similar to every other house she had stayed in. You follow the rules or you get punished. When you get punished, you end up in pain. Lexie tried to always follow the rules.

Lexie started on breakfast, deciding to make scrambled eggs and bacon. She made the eggs first and then the bacon. While they were cooking she set the table, placed the orange juice and milk on the table along with several glasses for the family as well.

Once the eggs and bacon were ready, she placed them onto plates and set them on the table as well. Lexie glanced at all the food and realized how hungry she had gotten. So she went into the kitchen and scavenged for something to eat before the family came down and ate everything in sight.

She found some bread and quickly stuffed it down her throat. She savored the slightly stale bread and she realized that not eating for a day could really make you hungry. She was punished the day before because she broke a rule. She spoke before she was spoken too. Lexie learned her lesson and was sure that she would never speak out of turn again.
