Prologue

I had just reached the apartment building when everything finally caught up to me, the long day, the heat, the tired legs. My fiancée's unit was on the fourth floor, so I dragged myself up the stairs thinking about how I'd just come from my parents' house.

Kuya told me to visit, so I did. I mean... It's Kuya. He misses me too fast for his own good. Minsan nga naiisip ko, ako ba talaga yung bunso? Because half the time, he acts like the younger one. Clumsy, clingy, a little childish in the way he talks and moves.

But honestly? I wouldn't change anything about him. I've gotten used to his warmth, the softness he shows me and our parents, the way he makes our home feel lighter just by being himself.

That's who he is.
And I love him just like that.

Bumukas ang elevator at agad akong lumabas, pagod na from the long day. Pagdating ko sa unit ng fiancé ko, ginamit ko na yung spare key at pumasok nang dahan-dahan. Dim light lang ang nakasindi sa sala, enough to see the space pero hindi gaanong maliwanag. Mukhang nasa kwarto siya.

Papunta ako sa kwarto nang may napansin akong kumikislap sa sahig. Huminto ako at bahagyang yumuko para tingnan. Isang bracelet.

Pinulot ko ito at tinitigan, trying to make sense of why it was even here.

Kevin doesn't wear bracelets. Kahit kailan, hindi siya nagsusuot ng accessory, so a small knot formed in my chest. Binalewala ko na lang muna and placed it on the table, telling myself not to overthink.

Tahimik ang buong apartment. Mas tahimik kaysa sa normal.

Maybe he was asleep? Soundproof kasi yung kwarto niya, kaya kahit anong ingay sa labas, hindi mo talaga maririnig. Medyo mahal nga yung unit, but it suited him so well I never questioned it.

Still, the silence tonight felt different.

Parang may kung anong hindi maipaliwanag habang papalapit ako sa pinto ng kwarto niya.

I slowly turned the doorknob, my heartbeat pounding louder with every inch the door opened.

"A-Ahh... Oh my God... faster, baby..."

Natigilan ako. The voice hit me so hard it felt like someone slapped me straight across the face.

I froze.

Parang may humigop ng hangin sa paligid ko. My hands went cold and for a second the whole world just... stopped.

And then I saw them.

Kevin.

His body moving against a woman I didn't even know. His hands were on her waist, holding her like she was something precious like she was his.

My chest tightened. Nanlamig yung sikmura ko. It was him. The man I trusted. The man I thought was mine.

Right there.

In our space.

With someone who wasn't me.

Siguro naramdaman ni Kevin na may nakatingin, kaya bigla siyang napalingon sa direksyon ko. Para siyang binuhusan ng malamig na tubig. Bigla niyang itinulak ang babae, napasubsob sa kama. Pero halos di pa nakalipas ang isang segundo, napa-upo agad ang babae at dali-daling inayos ang magulong buhok niya. Kita sa mukha nilang dalawa ang gulat... at takot.

"B-b-babe? Let me explain." Pautal-utal niyang sinabi, kaya napabaling ako sa kanya. Direktang tiningnan ko siya sa mata.

He was on the verge of tears, struggling to pull his boxers on, while looking at me like I was the one who broke him....like he was the victim.
