Midoriya's POV
I was walking back to the college dorms, which weren't too far from the campus. I had my earbuds in, listening to the news, and wasn't paying attention to the world around me. The days seem to merge. Each one has the same routine; wake up, get ready, go to class, get beat up, then go back to the dorms. Today, my bullies decided to beat me up longer than usual, which resulted in me getting a busted lip and a mild cut on my forehead. That doesn't include all the fresh and older bruises and cuts. Something may have angered them today, and they decided to take their frustrations out on me. Great. My roommate, Ida, always tells me that I shouldn't let them treat me like they do, while karate chopping the air. I don't know if I'll ever be able to stand up to them. I'm short for my age and quite weak, which makes me a perfect target for them.
I was crossing the street when I turned my head to see a car coming at me quickly, and I knew I wouldn't be able to move quickly enough. At that moment, I didn't panic. It was strange, but then I felt a hand grab and pull my hoodie, out of the car's way. I tripped on the back of my heel when the person pulled me back, and I fell backward. I quickly got up and began apologizing.
"I am so sorry!"
"It's okay, but you should look where you're going next time. You could've been hit." the person said with a monotone voice as they got up.
I knew that voice. It was a boy, named Todoroki, who was in a few of my business course classes. His dad was the owner of Endeavor Industries, which handled businesses.
"I'll remember that next time, heh."
"You're in a few of the business classes, right?" he asked
"Yeah, I'm majoring in journalism."
"Cool. By the way, what happened to your lip?"
"Oh, it's nothing. Just the classic stupid bullies that pick on people because they're different."
"Why don't you do anything about it?"
"I would, but I'm quite small and not that strong unlike them so it would be kinda hopeless."
"I see. Well, I should get going, my father doesn't like it when I'm late."
"Oh, right." I said, " Oh! I forgot to say thank you for keeping me from getting hit by the car!"
"It was no problem. See you in class tomorrow."
"Right. See you in class tomorrow!"
Todoroki's POV
Pulling Midoriya out from in front of that car was still at the forefront of my mind an hour after the incident. Something about the entire situation didn't sit right with me. Had he really just been that careless, or was there something else to it? The way that he had shrugged off my comment about his lip as just typical bullies made me nervous. It was as if he got beat up enough for him to be used to.
I was so deep in thought that the sound of my father calling my name almost eluded me.
"Shoto, are you paying attention?" my father asked.
My attention drifted back to the meeting that I was at for my father's company. Around the table were sponsors and partners of Endeavor Industries, and at the head of the table was my father, Endeavor.
"I'm sorry, Father," I responded. "My mind was elsewhere. Please continue."
As the meeting resumed, I scolded myself for being distracted by Midoriya. He should've been the last thing on my mind, and he had caused my focus to noticeably slip. I also scolded my father for forcing me to attend his boring meeting in the first place. It was bad enough that I had to put on a show for the public, but he expected me to do the same routine for his business partners, as well.
By the time the meeting was over, I was dying to do anything other than talk about property taxes and locations for new skyscrapers. Although, I knew that it wouldn't be as simple as leaving when the others did. As soon as everyone else was gone, the nice, kind man that they knew disappeared, and my father emerged from his hiding place.
"Why were you not paying attention?" he asked.
"I told you, my mind was somewhere else. I couldn't help it." I knew that wasn't what he wanted to hear. "I'm sorry. It won't happen again."
"It had better not!" he roared. "The next time I give you the privilege of seeing the inner workings of my company you better appreciate it! Do you understand!" I didn't answer. "DO YOU UNDERSTAND!"
"Yes."
"'Yes' what?"
"Yes sir."
He seemed to enjoy berating and belittling his own son. "That's more like it. You may go now, Shoto."
But I didn't understand. I didn't understand how one person could have so much anger inside. I didn't understand how he could just lock that side of him away and smile for the cameras. I didn't understand how a man could treat his son like some thing to be used for show. And I didn't understand how a man with such hate and cruelty inside of him could be on top of the world.
