If Zoya Caldwell was asked to describe Tiberius Blackthorn in one word, she would have chosen the word 'brilliant'.

Ty Blackthorn was one of a kind, and Zoya meant it with every fibre in her body. Ever since she had met the boy, when she was only thirteen and Ty merely reached the age of ten, Zoya had come to realize that Ty was more than just smart. His mind worked at brilliant speed, thinking of solutions to complex problems and discovering connections much faster than his peers. His excellent observing abilities often helped him overcome difficulties and analyze problematic situations up to the tiniest possible detail. It was a gift, really.

But, unfortunately, with every gift comes a heavy price.

Although Zoya would have never even fathom thinking that Ty was 'special' - as other people liked to describe him - the Clave very much would.

Tiberius Blackthorn, although he was given extraordinary brilliance, had a hard time concentrating when others were around. Call him a lone wolf or extremely stubborn, but Ty preferred doing everything on his own. With his set of headphones and music as the only companion, Ty worked wonders.

Zoya thought there was nothing wrong with that. Some people simply worked better off when left alone and the girl knew how to respect that. After all, some of the greatest minds thought of brilliant ideas when they were in their own company.

But other Shadowhunters didn't think like Zoya. The only things they saw when looking upon Tiberius Blackthorn were that he was awkward, mood-changing and not very interested in fulfilling his Shadowhunter obligations. Those observations were made by a single look and none of the Shadowhunters would have paused for a second to find out what was underneath the surface. Ty's family did. They knew just how remarkable he was and they valued him immensely. To the rest of the Blackthorns, Zoya and Emma - it didn't matter that Ty often couldn't recognize a sarcastic retort one of them had used or that he liked to focus on his books rather than on conversation. They didn't mind that Ty used headphones to concentrate and they certainly loved him with all of their hearts. Because, for them, Ty Blackthorn was irreplaceable. They all were.

"How can I help, Ty?" Zoya pulled up a chair to sit next to Ty who had already nested in front of the computer. His gray eyes were glued to the bright desktop, his long fingers typing keywords of his search.
