The day the world ended was the day Rue was born.

God took those who believed and let the rest of the people face the horrors that came falling across the world. Stories she grew up on told her that the sun was once whole, that Earth was once lush and green with birds that sang instead of ate people. The war was between humans who did and did not believe, between those who just could not face the fact that the end of days was near. God gave them every sign, every hint from His book, but no one listened, and the world suffered for it. Half the planet was caught on fire by a solar blast so powerful that the protective barrier around Earth could not withstand it. The atmosphere caved in pain from the hit.

The other half faced the bombs, blaming the United States of America for everything that happened. Rue's parents had Benjamin, her older brother, go down to the bunker hidden deep under their home to keep them safe from all the radiation and chaos. She did not remember any of it but knew the stories that he told her to be true.

Rue is sixteen years old now and they are on the surface of a very different world than what once existed.
