She was from Tuatha de Danann. Her father was a physician named Dian Cécht and sister to Miach. She was like her father and brother, gifted healers.

In legend, Dian was extremely jealous of his children's talented gifts. When the king, Nuadu, lost his arm during battle, Dian made an arm out of silver. But Airmid and Miach made a new one made out of living flesh. Since the arm was life-like, Nuadu regained the throne though injured, but it made him unqualified to rule, which made him known as the blemished king. Envious of the new arm, he killed Miach. When sad Airmid visited her brother's grave, she noticed hundreds of plants growing amongst the flowers. She found out that these plants had healing abilities. So she made it her goal to classify each one. each one was picked and sorted according to its medical benefits. With a few herbs left, Dian sneaked up behind her and scattered all of the herbs into the winds.
