Chapter 47: The Deal

Start from the beginning

If the ransom was something he couldn't give, then to hell with Huo Ai's relations with the nations of Zhong Xin.

The Emperor didn't wait for the Duke of Huo Ai to change his mind. "We only wish to have a sure-fire way to deal with these creatures lurking in the border. If We allow the creatures to proliferate, my people will suffer."

Duke Li glanced at the prince of his nation who just smiled back at him in an inexplicable manner.

The fifth prince knew that his presence made this transaction awkward. Here was the duke exchanging information that might harm their empire and he was a prince most doted by his Father Emperor. But he still puckered his dry lips and said, "This prince will follow you, brother. No need to worry about me."

The nerves on Huang Li Yun's forehead kept throbbing. He would be a fool to believe that. He might have had a temporary alliance with the fifth prince before so he could tolerate his presence a bit but the difference between then and now was so big! If he agreed with Yi Xiao Emperor today, it would be akin to betraying his country.

His head started to ache. The reason why he didn't want to associate himself in the Imperial City was that he hated politics. If everything could be settled by a battle, why speak?

But right now, he was caught in a difficult dilemma.

Tsk, what was the point in thinking so much? He was even willing to sell his soul to the devil if it was for the sake of his sister. He could sell his country as well. As for the stupid prince, the duke's eyes held a cold gleam. If worse came to worst, he would make sure Nuan Lin Che wouldn't be able to go back to Huo Ai.

Huang Li Yun straightened his back as he had decided. "Let me see the person first."

"How will We be sure that the Duke won't renege on his words?" It was the Emperor's turn to be complacent.

He knew that the duke took the bait already and it was a matter of time before he got his answers. But being as shrewd as he was, he wouldn't give Lady Huang to them without assurance.

However, nobody expected the fifth prince to be the one who speaks to show his support. "Yi Xiao Emperor, our Huo Ai duke will never go back on his words. If it helps, then an agreement can be signed."

Nuan Lin Che seemed to be indignant on behalf of his 'brother' duke. It was true that an oral promise could easily be broken.

But a contract could be solid evidence to push Duke Li to the guillotine. Huang Li Yun snorted. "No need. It's enough that we both know how much we need this deal."

Duke Li eyed the Emperor and found him nodding at his words. They were both desperate.

A few moments later, the Duke was still gripping the armrests of his seat.

Beside him, Nuan Lin Che curiously watched the agitated Duke. He was also excited, this was such a dramatic turn! What would happen if his Father Emperor learned that the Duke finally found his sister? That's right, most people speculated what happened to the Huang family except the one sitting on the throne.

The old man would probably throw a fit! Oh, how he wished that he would also be there to watch that! The Saint who colluded with his Father Emperor would also have a funny face by then. Nuan Lin Che would pay anything to see their reactions.

He who was known as the debauchee prince knew more things than what people expected.

He knew that the Huang clan didn't chase after the real culprits of the former duke and duchess' deaths because they were aware that it was his Father Emperor who was the mastermind. His Father Emperor loved to commend the Huang clan for their service but he was also threatened by their power.

Dealing with the duke and duchess was akin to cutting the Huang clan's limbs.

It was wise of Huang Li Yun not to mess with his Father Emperor but now that the little Huang princess was found, Nuan Lin Che wondered if the duke would continue tolerating his Father Emperor.

And how was the fifth prince so sure that Yi Xiao Emperor was holding the real Huang princess?

Of course, he pulled a few strings. As long as Nuan Lin Che wanted to know something, nothing could be hidden from him.

He looked at Yi Xiao Emperor who appeared to be someone who had taken a life-changing medicine. This young emperor had great potential. Too bad, he didn't know how big his real enemy was. If he did, he wouldn't be able to sit here calmly.

In truth, none of the people here knew what was to come except for him. But he had to play his part or else, his fun would be spoiled.

These three men were lost in thought. Each of them had their own plans for the future. Each of them had their own hidden agendas so the pavilion grew eerily quiet.

That was until two heavily-guarded sedans arrived at the pavilion.

A lady with an ornate palace dress went down first. Judging from her gait and gentle appearance, she was the Empress of Huo Ai.

The second person, however, was the real deal.

Nuan Lin Che had the urge to whistle. And the two dignified men beside him heard how he whistled in satisfaction.

No matter how inappropriate his behavior was, nobody had time for him.

Huang Li Yun stood up abruptly, looking as if he forgot to breathe.

But before he could move one step forward, shadow guards surrounded the person that he wanted to see the most.
