LEINANI WAS OUT OF COMPASSION. Before the Fire Nation attacked her village, everybody Leinani knew would be okay with helping their people in dire circumstances like a ship wreck. It had happened before, the waters surrounding their island were harsh and unforgiving. But the her village was burning and all Leinani could do was watch from the boat that her father's best friend Manu had snuck her into. Her father was on the front lines alone with the rest of the people in their village that could fight. Leinani begged him to turn around, to help them. All he did was shake his head and continue sailing with a somber expression and tears in his eyes.

And so Leinani told herself, no more compassion.

They made it to the Southern Water Tribe, their closest allies and the only people who may help them. They were freezing and blue when the boat crashed onto the shore of ice. The people helped them, recognizing their clothing from their few meetings they had held in the past. They recovered physically and eventually Manu left her to go fight.

Her life involved a boring cycle or fishing, trading, and weaving until one day, while joining Katara and Sokka, the only other people her age, Leinani finally gets the chance to leave when they discover an airbender that has a "flying" bison. However, the whole thing gets a lot more complicated when it is revealed that the airbender is the Avatar and the banished prince of the Fire Nation is hunting him.

It worsens when Leinani looks into the Firebender's eyes and sees his his pain. And she once gain feels compassion.
