40. Second Chance

The Davidson family gathered on the patio. No one said a word; they simply looked at the painting and the image reflected back at them. Chase had painted them how he'd seen them and how he'd hoped they'd remain: a vibrant, happy family.

"I don't want you to go, Daddy," Birdy said, reaching for her father's hand.

"I know. We'll see each other all the time, I promise," he said, pointing to the painting. "That's still us. It just might look a little different from time to time."

That night Nathan packed his car and drove back to the city. The road stretched out in front of him with infinite possibilities, but he was certain of one thing. He had to have his family in his life. Whatever came along on this journey of self-discovery would have to have room for them. They were everything to him and had given him the gift of a second chance. He vowed he wouldn't mess it up.
