...

Haneul froze in her position when she heard those words rolling off San's tongue. She didn't know what to say. She opened her mouth multiple times to say something, but it seemed like all the words from her vocabulary had vanished into thin air.

San decided to break the silence that was becoming painful as each second passed.

"H-Haneul, I-" but it looked like he also had lost the power to talk. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to blurt it out like that." His gaze was at the ground, unable to bring himself to meet her eyes.

"Sa-" Haneul opened her mouth but was cut off by San when he took her hand in his.

"Haneul," he paused, locking eyes with her, trying to decipher what might be going on in her head. "I wasn't gonna do it this way. For that, I'm sorry. But believe me, when I say this, I really am in love with you. I know this might seem too early but just know, my feelings for you are genuine."

He looked at their hands, still laced together. She didn't pull away but he could feel his heart drop. He knew he was in the wrong. That he shouldn't have done it now.

"I'm not gonna force you to say anything now. In fact, you can take up all the time in the world and I won't say a thing. But think about it okay? I'll wait for you. I always have and I always will." San gave her a small smile, in hopes that his sincerity had reached her heart somehow, in hopes that his wish would come true. He didn't want to overwhelm her and make things worse between them. That would be the last thing he'd want to happen.

"Okay. Can we go home now?" That's all she said. San knew better but he couldn't help but feel a little pang in his chest. But at least she didn't reject him.

"Don't you have work?" He asked.

"I actually took the rest of the day off." She said quietly, but loud enough for San to hear.

San didn't say anything and replied with a simple nod. He then led her to his car and proceeded to drive off in the direction of their neighborhood.

To say the ride was uneasy would be an understatement. It was excruciatingly painful for the both of them. Especially Haneul. She and San were always really comfortable around each other. And she had never fallen in any sort of situation like this before.

That's why it felt weird. Haneul never imagined someone like San to profess his love for her. But it would be a lie if she said she wasn't happy. She was. Very much. However, she couldn't help but be fearful. Frightened of what might happen. That's why she couldn't answer San right away.

-

When she reached home, her first instinct was to call her best friend. So she fumbled through her bag, looking for her phone until she found it.

Haneul quickly dialed the number and waited for her to answer. Thankfully, the wait wasn't too long and Byeol received it.

"Hey, what's up? Are you home? I wanna come over." Byeol spoke from the other side of the line.

"Umm, Byeol. So, San just told me that he's in love with me." Haneul said she knew Byeol was going to freak out.

"WHAT?! SO YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT SAN, CHOI FREAKING SAN JUST PROFESSED HIS LOVE FOR YOU?!" Yup. That's exactly the kind of response Haneul had expected from her.

"Wait, don't say anything. I'm coming over right now." With that, Byeol hung up without letting Haneul even say a word. She dropped onto the couch and waited.

Soon after, the door clicked open, signaling that someone was here. Haneul knew it was her best friend so she didn't bother getting up from the couch.

As soon as Byeol's eyes landed on Haneul, she threw her arms around her in a tight hug with a big grin plastered on her face.

"OMG is this even for real? Choi San just confessed to you?! And you said yes...You didn't, right?" Byeol pulled herself away from her and carefully eyed Haneul's expression.

"I didn't say anything, Byeol. I didn't know what to say." Haneul said as she plopped herself back onto the couch.
"But before anything, why do you seem awfully happy about this?"

"Well duh, Han. San's a great guy. So of course I'd be more than happy to let him date you. But what's wrong? Tell me," Byeol said. She normally would be very skeptical about any guy, especially when they wanted to be with Haneul. But this time, she was actually rooting for them.

"What is it? You don't like him?" Byeol asked.

Haneul shook her head. "It's not I don't like him. I think I do. But, you know. These kinda things are really foreign to me. I'm getting all sorts of negative thoughts and it's driving me crazy."

Over the years, Haneul didn't really have the time and luxury to date while preparing for law school. Although, that wasn't the only reason. Her lack of self-esteem and communication skills was also added to the list. She couldn't even bring herself to confess to anyone because she was always so introverted.

San was absolutely amazing in every way one could imagine. From his looks to his humor, his physique, his talents, the way he cared about his loved ones, everything was perfect. He was a great friend and she didn't want to lose what they had. And that's exactly what threw her off. She thought, there were so many other girls, no doubt, who were better in every aspect than Haneul. So why her?

Haneul had a very bad tendency to overthink to the point where the most insane scenarios would pop up in her head. Just like now. She was having ridiculous thoughts, for no reason at all. San was sincere and she could feel it. But yet, she was unable to pull her away from the pessimistic voices in her head.

"Listen, if you actually like him then there's absolutely no reason for you to be scared. San isn't like the others. If you're not feeling it right now, then tell him. Don't hide anything. I'll support you no matter what. You know that, right?" Byeol finished as she gave Haneul's hands a reassuring squeeze.

Haneul let out a deep sigh and smiled at her best friend.
