"Cole?" Paige whispered in the darkness.
"Yeah?"
"I love you," she said quietly.
The door clicked shut. Just as I was about to crawl into bed, I heard someone rapping on my window. I pulled the curtain aside to see Myra, the girl I had promised Paige I didn't have feelings for.
Our relationship was complicated. The two of us had lived together at a Charles Simmons' lab for six months while they performed horrible experiments on us. The only reason we had survived was because we had each other. We would help each other when things went wrong and one of us ended up with an injury. And as we grew dependant on one another, we had almost fallen in love. But I remembered Paige, and how she had nearly died to save my life so many times before.
"What do you want?" I asked Myra impatiently.
She inched from the window a little, hearing the distaste in my voice. We had cared for each other, but Myra became jealous once she learned that Paige and I were together. She had tried to kill Paige on multiple occasions, failing due to her inexperience. Myra was a spy, so she had no idea what our job was like as assassins.
"I just wanted to warn you. Charles is up to something. There have been tons of cars driving into his headquarters in Arizona. None of them have come back out."
"Why should I believe you, Myra? John has people watching Charles 24/7. We have't heard anything from John in a while," I retorted.
She took a deep breath. "You have to believe me. Something is wrong. Did you ever think that John hasn't been contacting you because he can't? I think he's being held captive somewhere so he can't warn you about this. It's important that you listen to me, Cole."
I started to believe her, but doubt crept into my thoughts. Myra was a pathetic liar. I didn't know why John still let her work as a spy.
Pulling the curtains together, I sat down on my bed. I couldn't have slept if I wanted to.
