"My monkey man." Rosalie remarked from her place next to Esme when Emmett really did climb the tree like he was in a zoo.
Then everything that happened next was like a blur.
Rosalie had stepped up to bat again and she'd just started running when Alice screamed for everyone to stop.
"Why, why stop?" Charlotte whispered to Esme, she'd just decided that baseball was her new favourite sport and now they were stopping? Well, it was her favourite when the Cullens played it anyway.
She never received a reply from Esme, instead she looked to where everyone else was looking to find three figures gliding onto the field through fog, what was this, a Black Eye Peas concert?
Everyone started to rush over to where Charlotte was stood, Alice explaining something about how the three people had been leaving but Charlotte wasn't really paying attention, confused on why everyone seemed to be kicking up a fuss.
Edward started pushing Charlotte back towards where they had come from "Lets go." He said as he pushed harder.
"It's too late." Carlisle spoke from a bit behind him.
"Put your hair down."
"Like that'll help." Rosalie snorted, "I can smell her across the field."
Maybe Charlotte shouldn't have put on that new perfume today, but she wanted at least one of them to compliment her on it, with their super smell and all.
As the figures got closer the rest of the Cullens apart from Edward started walking in some kind of formation with Carlisle at the front.
"I shouldn't have brought you here. I'm so sorry."
"What?" Charlotte stuttered out, still confused on the behaviour of everyone.
"Just be quiet and stand behind me." He said, not explaining why and walking towards his family.
"Me be quiet?" She snorted in reply, walking next to him. Charlotte wasn't an oblivious person, she just liked to use humour in uncomfortable situations. But it seemed from the look Edward shot her at her attempt at a joke, that now wasn't the right time.
The clan met the smaller clan half way across the field, Charlotte staying close to Edwards side. She watched carefully as the one with beautifully long deadlocks held up the ball they were playing with before.
"I believe this belongs to you." His silky voice said before tossing it to Carlisle who caught it easily in his hand.
"Thank you."
"I am Laurent." Cute name and cute accent. "And this is Victoria." Victoria needed a hairbrush and maybe then she could pull off hobo chic. " And James." James looked like he needed therapist but each to their own.
"I'm Carlisle, this is my family." Charlotte knew it wasn't the time but she couldn't help but mentally scream when Carlisle said family, meaning she was part of it too.
"Hello."
"I'm afraid your hunting activities have caused something of a mess for us."
"Our apologies. We didn't realise the territory had been claimed." Laurent spoke a lot, could the others not speak for themselves?
"Yes, well we maintain a permeant residence near by."
Laurent seemed surprised at this information, maybe it wasn't a normal thing for vampires to stay in one place for a prolonged time "Really? Well we won't be a problem anymore. We were just passing through." Charlotte knew how strange the golden eyed vampires must be to the red eyed ones.
"The humans were tracking us but we led them East. You should be safe." Oh so she can talk, Charlotte almost wished she hadn't though, her voice was too sickly sweet.
"Excellent." Not that it really mattered to the family though.
"So could you use three more players?" Laurent asked, it was clear he was trying to ease the tension, no one had stopped glaring since the confrontation had started. Everyone looked to Carlisle to see what he would say, Laurent must have seen his too. "Oh come on. Just one game."
He must have thought it would be too shady to say no to them, for what real reason did he have? The vampires had been friendly enough. "Sure, why not? Some of us were just leaving, you can take their place. We can bat first." That seemed to ease the tension between the two groups.
Carlisle threw the ball to Laurent, but Victoria reached an arm out to catch it instead. "I'm the one with the wicked curve-ball." She smirked.
"I think we can handle that." Rosalie replied with a scoff. This moved all the eyes further away from the vampire and human pair and towards her and a smirking Emmett. Charlotte could still feel Edward's arm tense around her though, even though it now seemed everything was going to be fine.
"We shall see." Victoria replied, moving to stand where Alice once was, Laurent following after her.
James however, didn't move. And as if the interruption hadn't spoiled Charlotte's day it only made it worse when a breeze flew through the air, dragging Charlotte's hair with it.
Charlotte had hoped that no one would notice, but of course that wasn't the case.
"You brought a snack." James declared, his eyes darting over to Charlottes figure.
Each of the Cullens ran to surround Charlotte, all in a defensive position, Edward the most defensive of all, a growl leaving his lips.
"The girl is with us." Charlotte had not been scared many times in her life, but now was the most scared she'd ever been. "I think it would be best if you left." Carlisle's voice was calm, but she could tell from his stance that he was anything but.
"Yes I can see the game is over." Laurent said, raising his hands in surrender. "We'll go now." Even though it was clear they were no longer welcome James didn't make any effort to move, keeping his eyes trained on Charlotte who'd started to slightly shake.
"Get Charlotte out of here."
Edward rushed Charlotte over to the Jeep, trying to strap her in "Okay okay I got it! I'm not a child." She said when Edward struggled to strap her in the first time.
"No you're just a human who can't walk down the street without tripping over her own feet." Ouch. "James is a tracker. I saw his mind, the hunt is his obsession and my reaction set him off." Edward explained as he started driving the car away from the field, quite a lot over the speed limit.
"I just made this his most exciting game yet."
okay so this isn't 100% accurate or perfect but who can actually do the baseball scene justice?
also can we talk about how attractive jasper is in this scene?? the baseball scene literally cured my depression AND made me question my sexuality.
