Prologue

We were eight when my best friend Oliver asked me,

"Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be a boy?" I impulsively replied, "Don't be silly Oliver, I'm a girl." I mean, I was too young to understand. Then, a week before our fifth grade graduation, while I was picking out my dress, he asked,

"How come only girls get to wear dresses?" Without giving it much thought I responded,

"I don't know, that's just how it works." One day after school, during eighth grade, as I was walking Oliver home from my house, he suddenly stopped, dropped my hand and turned to me,

"Hey Alice, have you ever felt like you were in the wrong body?"

"What do you mean by that?"

"I feel like a girl trapped in a boy's body."

“Are you sure? This is serious.” I said. After a long pause he said,

“Yeah, I’m sure. I'm a girl.” There's a moment of silence, and before I could reply, he added,

“Are you okay with that?” I take Oliver’s hand again and pull him into a hug,

“You know I’ll always love you for who you are.” Now, years later, my best friend goes by Olivia. We're in our Sophomore year and she came to me and said,

"I told my parents today."

"Is everything okay, how did they react?"

"I think my dad already knew because when I told them, he didn't seem too fazed. But my mom went ballistic and Dad tried reasoning with her, but seemed too scared to stop her."

"What did she do? Are you alright?"

"I don’t know, she kicked me out of the house, I have no idea what I’m gonna go."

"You know you should stay with us. You’re already like part of the family."

"I know, thanks for the offer. But ...  I don't want to be a burden, I'll figure something out."

"Please just stay with us..."

"I can't. I promise I'll try to keep in contact with you." After that conversation, I haven’t seen her since.
