When his eyes adjusted and he caught sight of his mate in the darkness, his heart dropped to his stomach. The blonde omega looked so frightened with his arms wrapped around his stomach. He was shaking, his eyes clenched tight.

"Woong? Baby... what's wrong?" His voice was clearly thick with sleep.

"H-Hurts." He whined and wrapped his arms around himself tighter.

All color left Youngjo's face. "What hurts?" He's trying to keep his voice calm, but he was definitely scared.

With a shutter, Hwanwoong answered, "My stomach is cramping... b-bad. I don't think this is n-normal."

Out of instinct, Youngjo threw the furs off of his mate. He stood and lit the nearest candle so that they could see better. It was the middle of July so they didn't have a fire already going.

Hwanwoong's gasp of fear brought his own fears to reality. "Jo...," the omega cried, "I'm bleeding."

When Youngjo finally brought himself to look, he confirmed it with his own eyes. Hwanwoong was bleeding between his legs, soaking entirely through the boy's trousers and onto their furs. It was a lot.

"Let's not panic, Woong. Let's get you to the midwife and see what she has to say." Youngjo carefully picked his lover up, cradling him in his arms, and carried him all the way to the midwife's home under a moonless sky.

But it was too late. After this day, Youngjo felt like he had not only lost his pup, but also his mate.

"Baby... it's not your fault." Youngjo tried to reason with his mate for the thousandth time.

It didn't matter how many times he said it, Hwanwoong refused to believe him, let alone listen to him.

The omega has refused to leave his side of the furs and has his back turned toward the older, resisting the temptation to even look in his alpha's direction. He felt like he had failed him and he was ashamed of it. His main purpose of even existing as an omega was to give his alpha healthy pups, and he couldn't even do that right.

In his mind, Youngjo shouldn't even want him anymore, so why won't he just leave him alone? But at the same time, all he wants is to feel his alpha's arms wrapped around him, burying him in the comfort of his sage scent.

He would shake those thoughts away because he didn't deserve it. He was worthless. If he couldn't carry a baby to term, then what good was he to Youngjo?

"I brought porridge from the healer. She said it has a lot of nutrients in it that should help you since you've been so weak ever since..." He would never complete that sentence out loud. He would do anything to keep his omega from feeling any worse.

It's been weeks. Hwanwoong hasn't been taking care of himself ever since the miscarriage. He doesn't eat. He lays in bed all day, but he doesn't rest. Youngjo has to force the omega to take a few sips of water every day just to keep him alive.

If the alpha is being honest, he dreadfully misses life before all of this happened. They were happily mated, they had their first baby on the way, and life was lining up perfectly. Why did this have to happen to them?

He misses his mate's blinding smile, the way he scrunched his nose when he laughs, and how sassy and charismatic he could be, giving him that spark in his eyes.

He feels like he's lost the mate he fell in love with.

Though he still loves him dearly, which is why he will never stop taking care of him and never stop trying to make a smile reappear on his gorgeous face. He will always do that much for him.
