Chapter 9

“Hey April” Meredith said as she opened her front door

Jackson, April and Lydia had gotten back from Boston the day before. Lydia was desperate to tell the fellow “surgeon kids” about her vacation, so a play date was set up at Meredith’s

“Hey Meredith” April said back

“Hi Dr. Meredith” Lydia grinned up at her, with a bag of her toys from Grandma Cat, which had Mr. Avery Bear’s head sticking out of it

“Hello Lydia” Meredith smiled down at the little girl before looking at April “I have to get to the hospital in a few minutes so I can’t stay with them as planned. But the nanny is already here so she’ll keep an eye on them”

“Oh, ok” April said

After getting her children and Sophia to promise they’ll be good, Meredith caught a ride to the hospital with April, who had just done the same with her daughter.

“So, how was Boston?” Meredith asked as they were on their way

“It was great, had a lot of fun” April answered, trying to hide the nervousness by being perky

But her perkiness was a bit too much, and Meredith could tell that she was trying to hide something. She waited for April to give more detail, but she kept quiet. See, Meredith had her own car, she could have driven herself to the hospital, but she chose to ride with April because the woman was on a mission. Tequila shots at Joe’s one night a few months before, revealed that April and Jackson weren’t having sex and April’s frustration with keeping her legs closed. Knowing that, and witnessing the countless ‘I want to do you’ stares between her and Jackson, she was sure that something was going to happen between them. Being the first to see April after she came back from her vacation, meant that she had the opportunity to be the first to know the juicy details and start the japril gossip with Cristina.

“Did anything interesting happen?” she asked, digging for information

“Uh……” April thought for a minute “We stayed at Harper’s really big mansion, got a tour of the foundation building, went to the foundation’s summer gala and we visited some sites”

“That’s it?” Meredith asked not believing it

“Oh yeah” April said remembering something “I got to scrub in on this amazing surgery at Mass Gen. This guy had a tumor the size of her watermelon in….” April began to tell her story

Meredith frowned a bit. As awesome as a tumor was, it didn’t beat the gossip of a japril hook up. She knew April was hiding something, and she knew it might be a while before she said anything. But she was Meredith Grey; she would find a way to get it out of April Kepner.

“I love you princess Ariel” Lydia said in her best Prince Eric voice before turning to her Ariel doll “I love you too Prince Eric” she added in a high pitched voice “Muah” she said as she made the dolls kiss

Lydia, Zola, Sophia and Bailey were sitting in the play room, playing with their toys. Lydia was giving them her own version of The Little Mermaid story.

“Yay!” Zola and Sophia cheered, clapping the hands of their own princess dolls

“Ew” Bailey commented “She’s going to give him cooties”

“Nuh uh” Lydia frowned at him

“Uh huh, all girls have cooties” Bailey said

“Girls don’t have cooties, boys have cooties” Lydia shot back
