The Dragon

Rusted spear in silver skin,
blood trickling from the shaft,
a scale litters charred grass
like glass, almost clear,
glinting in the sunlight.

Flames consumed buildings
burning yet unnoticed
by the brave soul,
a limping woman,
gash on her thigh.

A heaving chest,
the monster turned,
horns scratching burnt wood,
wondering if the human
had fled for her life.

Frosted blue eyes shimmered,
hints of betrayal, confusion, fear,
passed among dragon and human alike
as tight muscles clench further,
aching and spreading like poison.

The dragon moved first,
storm grey smoke wafting
from its nostrils, fleeing from fire,
embers of blended yellows and oranges
threatened to burn human flesh to ash.

The flames dispersed
alongside the woman's fear.
With curious eyes, she stared
at the cracked scales, some missing,
Exposing warm papered skin.

Claws slammed into trodden earth,
shattering cracked scales
and the woman's daze.
For a sword she lunged,
desperation entering the fray.

Fear and hate burrowed deep
in the eyes of human and beast.
Through scales and skin
the dragon clawed,
paving a way for the end.

A white-knuckled grip,
weathered blade sinking
into the dragon's heart,
the woman wept
as the beast smiled.
