Outside, my best friend, Wendy, was waiting for me. She gave the look she'd give someone who was late. "What?" I ask, annoyed. "You're late! We might not make it!!!" She says urgently, "and if we don't make it, we won't be picked!!" "What if I don't want to be picked?" I say, clearly disappointing her. "You must want to be picked just a little?" She says, by now we're just standing in the pouring rain, getting drenched. "I just want to get this over with." I say dismissively.
Henry comes out with my horse, willow. I'd named her after my sister who'd been picked one year, my father went to retrieve her, and neither of them ever came back.

The princes came in after all the girls were shuffled to the altar, and they began to choose who was never going to see their family again.
