"What a klutz," a tall blonde girl from the other table snickered as she looked at Becky in mockery. "I thought only Tenny was that clumsy."
"Priscilla! Don't be mean! Becky's just showing her cheer spirit early!" a girl with a slight accent scolded.
"Oh, shut up, Bobbie," Priscilla retorted. She turned back to Becky, who was practically shaking from the humiliation. Teddy wanted to jump in to help the poor girl, but her body refused to move. However, Priscilla seemed to be done mocking Becky as she only sighed, bored. "Whatever, just don't spill anything on yourself this time. You need to work on your coordination if you really want to be a cheerleader."
"Like, totally," a tan girl with red hair agreed.
"...Sorry," Becky muttered quietly as she took a seat between Isa and Ruby.
Priscilla rolled her eyes. "You better be," she said as she went back to her food. Slowly, the cafeteria turned their attention back to their food as well.
"Damn, this is my fault, isn't it?" Talia muttered, her voice so soft that Teddy could barely hear her. Teddy shook her head and typed a message into her AAC app. However, she didn't press enter, instead handing her phone under the table to Talia.
Upon reading Teddy's note that it wasn't her fault, Talia wore a small smile and handed Teddy back her phone, leaving a message of thanks. At that exact moment, Lola came back into the cafeteria, looking around for a moment before quickly making her way over to the table.
"Okay, good, the Stepford Smiler is gone," Lola said as she spotted Leah sitting next to Penelope again.
"Wow, what did Leah do to you?" Sawyer asked, confused.
"Nothing, really," Lola admitted. "It's just that people who are sunshine and rainbows all the time get on my nerves. They have to be hiding something. I mean, nobody's actually that happy all the time."
"Or maybe you're just a pessimist," Gale interjected.
"Yeah, well, so are you," Lola replied.
"...Okay, I guess that's fair," Gale conceded.
"...What about me?" Sawyer asked worriedly. "I'd say that I'm pretty optimistic. Oh no, do I get on your nerves as well?"
"Oh, no, of course not," Lola answered, shaking her head. "You actually get sad sometimes, just like a normal human being. Plus, you aren't up in everyone's face about positivity."
"Leah isn't that bad," Teddy's AAC app cut in. "She just thinks the best way to get more friends is to just pretend to be happy always."
Lola raised an eyebrow. "You're telling me that nobody's ever told her that it seems dishonest or fake when the only thing she does is smile?"
Well, people have told her that before, Teddy thought to herself. Leah's just... persistent. But she just shook her head, instead typing something else that had been on her mind into the AAC App.
"Earlier, you said something about Gale following your advice, Sawyer. Can I ask what that was about?" The AAC app read aloud.
"Oh, well, before I first started at this school last year, I was worried since all my friends from middle school were going to another high school instead," Gale admitted. "But when I told Sawyer here that I was afraid I wouldn't make any friends at this school, she told me she was friends with two of her upperclassmen and that they would be going to this school as well. And so, the first day of school came, and I met Talia and Lola here, and well, the rest is history."
"Gale and I are next door neighbors," Sawyer explained. "That's how we know each other. I was so glad that there would be four of us when I finally went to this school, but today it was even better, now there's six of us! Maybe even seven if Ellie joins us tomorrow like she said she would."
"Who's Ellie?" Talia asked.
"Oh, she's this other freshman we met today!" Sawyer said cheerfully.
"Wait, so I'm actually free to sit here? Even tomorrow?" Teddy's AAC App cut in. This is probably a stupid question, Teddy thought, but if I heard Sawyer right, she considers me one of her friends and I just want to make sure I'm not interpreting this wrong.
"Oh, of course you are!" Sawyer said sweetly. "Teddy, Dora, you both are so nice! You are definitely welcome here!" This got her a "Gracias" from Dora. Sawyer then paused before adding, "...but for some reason, I kinda wish there were EIGHT of us."
"Oh no," Lola said. "I've heard enough about Aiden's apparently 'nonexistent' obsession with the number eight during math class today. You are not going to go down that route as well."
Teddy raised an eyebrow at both Sawyer and Lola, but it seemed neither really wanted to elaborate. Instead, she finished typing up what she wanted to say next.
"Thank you," the AAC app read aloud. "To be honest, I'm relieved. From what I saw today, it seems like my other friends usually sit with Ferris and Connor, among others."
"Ugh, those two fight every day," Lola complained. "I don't get why they don't just ignore each other."
"To be fair, Lola, you fight with my friend Barbara all the time," Talia pointed out. "And you're always the one who starts it."
As the others continued to chat, Teddy smiled. While lunch had gotten off to a rough start, everyone had eventually started getting comfortable again. She just had to wonder what else the school day had in store for her.
Author's Note: Aaaaaaaah I'm sorry for not updating in forever but senior year has been a bi- sees the Moral Guardian crowd coming at me with pitchforks and torches- a... Bitcoin (-y). To be honest, I also kind of lost motivation for a while, but then my good friends Rage and Spite helped give me the motivation I needed to complete this. Don't ask.
Anyways, this is a lot of dialogue high school social stuff because well, it's lunch, also known as Social Hour! Not gonna lie the whole point of this AU is so I can write Slice of Life stuff like you saw this chapter. (I'm sorry! Please just let me be self indulgent this once!)
Anyway, Priscilla is Pencil, Bobbie is Bubble, and the red haired girl who sat beside them is Match (her human name is Maddie, by the way). Also, they're only mentioned here, but Tenny is Tennis Ball, Aiden is 8Ball, and Barbara is Barf Bag (though she usually goes by Babs).
Also, I made this story before Two crashed the party, so somehow I'll change some of the later events I planned in this AU to include Two, Profily, Purple Face, Winner, and Price Tag (along with maybe some of the other numbers) but I can't promise that they'll all appear right away. (And before you ask about Announcer, don't worry! From the start I [spoiler] intended to make him the principal of the school.)
Anyway, thanks for reading!
