"Tori . . . Tori." Trina shook her younger sister to wake her up from her sleep. The tired brunette groaned in annoyance, shooing Trina's hand away while also mumbling something inaudible.
"Get up, Tor." Trina grasped her shoulder and began shaking her again. "We have to go see Mom."
Tori sighed, obviously not wanting to get up but at the mention of her mother, she knew she had to. "Fine." She mumbled from under the covers.
"Dad said be ready in 30." Trina informed then turned and left her room.
Tori rolled onto her back when she heard the door click, ensuring that Trina was gone. She pulled the purple comforter down off her face and stared up at the ceiling for a few moments then got up, going in to the bathroom she has in her room.
She looked in the mirror, knowing that her eyes would be red and puffy, which they were, due to her crying all night long. When she first received the news about her Mom a week ago, her only two emotions were shock and disbelief. But last night was the first time she cried. She cried like she never had before. She couldn't imagine her life without her Mom, the woman who gave her life and raised her up until this point. It wasn't fair that she had to go.
Thinking about all of it made her brown eyes well up with tears. She knew that her mother wouldn't want her to keep crying, so she sucked it up and began her daily routine. 20 to 25 minutes later, she was dressed in a light gray sweat suit, paired with UGG's and her chocolate hair pulled back into a ponytail at the nape of her neck. Her eyes were no longer red or puffy after washing her face in cold water to make sure of it.
'Mom can't know I was crying; it'll only upset her.' She thought to herself.
"Tori, you ready?" She heard her Dad call up to her. She took one last look at herself in the full body mirror and sighed before grabbing her phone and heading down the steps.
At the bottom of the stair case was her Dad with the car keys in his hand. "Morning, babygirl." He greeted. Tori shot him a smile that didn't meet her eyes as she walked past him and toward the door.
"M'ija, wait." His request halted Tori at the door; she turned and faced him. He sighed, partially sitting on the back of the sofa. "Are you okay?" He quizzed with a concerned expression on his face.
Tori mentally rolled her eyes, obviously in no mood for 21 questions but she knew her father meant well. "I'm fine, Dad." She answered.
"You sure?" He gently pressed. "Because Trina says she heard you crying last night."
"Well, what do you expect me to do after being told that my Mom has 2 to 4 weeks left to live, huh?" She asked with sarcasm in her voice.
"Tori, please don't be mad at me."
"How can I not be?!" Her sadness quickly turned into anger. "Mom got diagnosed 11 months ago which is basically a year and you didn't bother to tell me and Trina until last week! It's already too late."
"I was just protecting you guys." David pleaded his case. "This is Trina's first year of college and your last year of high school. I-I didn't want to tell you guys and have you distracted, M'ija."
Tori shook her head. "You know what? There's literally nothing you can say to make this any better." She turned away and walked out the door, to the car.
Trina was in the front seat of the car, applying mascara to her lashes. Tori got into the car, pulling the door shut with a little more force than she intended. Trina slightly jumped at the slam of the door then turned toward her sister. "Tori, I almost poked my eye out." She whined.
