"What if he's a pervert?" I asked, looking at my reflection as I prepared for the blind date I had been forced into.

"Jane Allen, he is not. He's a close friend of mine."

I sighed. "Then why haven't I met him?"

Maddie smiled. "Because I was waiting for a perfect time for you two to meet."

"Then why don't YOU date him?" I asked suspiciously.

She gave me a fake smile. "He's more for you."

"How did you meet him then, huh?" I wasn't totally convinced that she hadn't just randomly met him at a market before setting us up.

"I met him a year ago when my mom wanted me to marry him," Maddie rolled her eyes.

Maddie has been my best friend since we were in grade three. Her red hair and freckles had made her very popular at an English school, and for some reason she chose me as her friend. We have never been in a fight and we are now seventeen, living in an apartment together. Life seemed perfect.

"Is this dress okay for the pervert chap?"

Maddie rolled her eyes and laughed. "You look lovely. He's eighteen and you'll absolutely love him."

I flattened out my dress, then put on my usual red lipstick. It was a trademark of sorts. My blonde hair, blue eyes and light skin made the lipstick fit somehow. I didn't think I was beautiful, nothing compared to Maddie, but I wasn't going to call myself unattractive.

"What's his name again?" I asked.

"Paul. And that's all I'm going to tell you." Maddie smiled.

I played with my curls for a minute more before shrugging at my reflection and grabbing my purse. "I'll see you soon, Doll."

"Don't stay out too late," she winked.

I gave her a look she liked to call the 'Jane death glare' and left to walk to the restaurant five minutes away. It was 1960 in Liverpool, the weather was set for rain, which always bothered me for some reason. I hated rain, but I would never move out of Liverpool, and I knew it. Maddie and I have just graduated high school and decided we didn't want to live with our parents constantly having rules over us.

I walked into the restaurant Maddie had set up for us to eat in and went to the hostess.

"How may I help you?" She smiled.

"I'm meeting a man for dinner on a blind date. His name is Paul?"

The hostess seemed confused for a second. She looked down at her little book to see if the reservation had been made.

Maybe Maddie had made up this 'blind date' thing as a prank on me. Maybe he won't show up because there is no Paul. Or maybe he'll walk in, see me and then walk out. Or maybe she even met an insane boy and thought this would be funny. But it's not funny, it's a sick joke. I can't believe my best friend would purposely set me up for a disaster. How am I supposed to-

My thoughts were interrupted.

"Jane?"

I glance at the boy, surprised at how attractive he was.

"Yes, hello Paul?"

He nodded and shook my hand, very steadily and warm. Somehow, he was charming.

"I'm delighted to meet you. You look very beautiful, if I may say so."

I blushed as Paul lead us towards a booth he had reserved.

"Would you like to sit, my love?" He asked with a cheeky smile.

I blushed and smiled as he pulled my chair out for me.

He sat down after I did. "So, why is someone as beautiful as you available on a Friday night?"
