The Alphas and Betas all congregate in a large holding room, the tension was palpable. Lesser Alphas steered clear of the dominance radiating at the front of the room, opting to shift to the back, warily watching the other males in the room. Double doors were opened by the guards of the Citadel allowing the Canis Lupus council to file in.
All the werewolves turned to look at the council as the talking ceased. The speaker briefly gazed around at each and every person in the audience.
"Thank you for joining us today" the speaker boomed, "I know it is very rare that we place a call for an Alpha gathering. The last one was what.. 300 years ago? Yet we felt it was imperative to give everyone an equal chance". The speaker moved his hand slightly, signaling to another member to turn on the television screens. "Each of your Betas' today will be facing an opponent, starting with the least populated packs," meaning the weaker packs. "Up to the largest packs. This is a test not only for your pack but also for the Citadel. Once your Beta has competed, you may stay for the rest of the week as planned or leave." He briefly paused, "All of our facilities are at your disposal, the library, the gym, the pool ... but you are not to harass those that live and devote their time to the Citadel. Extreme consequences will be faced if this law is broken." The council speaker looked out at the werewolves; some were gazing at the screen looking, others were staring down the competition. "You are ordered not to speak of the opponent or challenge to Betas who haven't competed. Those who are left to face the opponent will be isolated, the rest are free to roam." The speaker knew locking up a bunch of Alphas would cause outwards displays of dominance. They wouldn't be fighting but they would be watching their Betas fight.
"What's this for? An opponent is facing, what like 200, 300 Betas this week?" An Alpha called out.
"Yes." The speaker rounded on the Alpha, "they will be. The reason why we are doing this will be clearer afterwards." The speaker's eyes hardened as he spoke. It wasn't the Alphas job to inquire about why they were here or even what they were doing. The Citadel had stood the test of time, standing for over 1000 years and this Alpha pup should know better than to question the council. There was no arguing there was just submitting, in the eyes of the council.
"Please enjoy the Citadel, as it hasn't seen so many werewolves in decades. Alphas your luggage is in the West Wing, your Betas will be in the East. Names are on the doors, feel free to ask the guards or Omegas if you are lost or can't find your room. Good luck this week, we shall see you soon." The council made its way out of the room as loud chatter began to rise again.
What was the challenge about? Why did it need all the Alphas of Earth?
And who was this opponent?
The council speaker walked slowly away from the Alphas and Betas, taking his time as he slowly made his way to an ancient part of the castle. He paused at the archway that led into the library.
Everyone was unaware of his presence, instead continuing their work of filing and translating. His eyes focused on 3 figures in the centre of the vast room. Two were pulling books from the shelves and piling them into a young girl's forearms.
The slight teen was smiling with her head bowed as they spoke quietly about the ancient texts.
When her arms were full she turned towards him, large doe eyes locked onto him, surveying him. It always felt like she could see right threw him, into the darkest depths of his mind. She gave a polite nod before bowing her head and moving towards him.
He grabbed onto her shoulder when she neared, "You better get ready for tomorrow." His hand gripped tighter leaving a mark on her skin as she only nodded keeping her eyes cast down. There would be no room for mistakes tomorrow, he all but commanded it of her.
He released her after staring down at her for minutes, allowing her to past. Straightening her back she silently walked away from him, never looking back.
One day, somehow, he would pay for all his sins but not today. Today was all his. He remained on top and he would do anything to keep it that way.
