A Merry Elf's Appearance

©December 22nd 2019, Olan L. Smith

It came to me upon the eve of Christmas Day,

Remembrance of older times, when we fell to sleep,

A little elf would land upon our roof, and down

The chimney creep, but with all my might

I could not keep my eyelids pried apart, perchance

To see the sprite lay cherished gifts under our tree.

One snowy Christmas day, my brothers trounced

Near my bed, "Awake," they shouted with open glee, "Come,

And see where Santa's sleigh landed high upon our roof."

I, not one to reject the offer of proof that the merry

Elf exists, not I to deny a lie foretold from ancient times

Of a Saint, who gave gifts to little ones who believe, but

Here was the solidifier of the fib, my sled marks

Trail down the roof, who was I to break their heart.
