lightning-flash memories
of years spent pressed sloppily between the pages of books
suspended numbly between a pair of earbuds
hunched over a faded notebook full of song lyrics
i wished i was living ;

all of these so flimsy
escapes from a harsh reality so easily shattered by the static fear
that has always called my veins home

all of these places a million times safer
a million times more hidden
than beneath live electric lights
that make yours eyes glow with real, piercing life

all of these soft and easy and worn edges i'll never prick my fingers on

and yet,
all of these so dull
so empty
so lifeless
compared to a single second spent afloat
in the gravity-liberation
of your moonflower eyes.
