Thomas’s POV

I suggested to Riley that she hides the fact that she is a female because there is bound to be some criticism. She told me that that isn’t like her and that she was going to be straight up about it. She was purposely the last one out. When she walked across the field we were already standing in a circle.

‘I’m sorry darling but the cheerleaders are in the gym’ Coach smiles at her. He reaches to place his hand on her shoulder but she pushes it away.

‘I’m here to try out’ she smiles.

‘But you are a girl’ Coach laughs.

‘What? No one told me’ she teases looking down at herself in mock horror making most of the team laugh.

‘Girls aren’t allowed to play’

‘They are. Trust me I read the rule book four times’

‘Even if they are you had to sign up and we are only waiting for a Riley Daniels’

‘I am Riley Daniels’

‘Are not’

‘Are so too’ Riley said smirking.

‘She is’ Luke said before the argument got childish.

‘Fine, all of you complete eight laps’ he snapped and headed inside.

When Coach returned we were all finished and stretching. He glared at Riley before starting.

‘Girl what position do you play?’ he barked.

‘Receiver’ she smirked.

‘We have plenty of those’

‘No you don’t. My brother said that you struggled to get one on the field’

It’s true. We came fifth for the third year in a row. The first team that doesn’t make the playoffs. Luke and I spent so long trying to get Riley to play because we really want to make the play off because it is our last year.

‘So you started playing that’ he accused.

‘No I have been a receiver since I was five’ she smiles.

‘We are going to start now. Riley you can pair up with Wright, our starting quarterback from last year. Start five yards apart and once you have completed five consecutive passes you can move back five yards. All receiver and quarterbacks pair up’ he snapped.

He clearly doesn’t realise that Riley and I are related but then again most people don’t. We have different last names. I have Father’s and she has Mother’s. Riley told me once that it was because Father wanted boys and that is how she ended up with a boy’s name and Mother’s last name but I don’t believe her.
