Chapter One

At the very beginning of my job here at the Detroit City Police Department, things were a little difficult to get accustomed to. For one thing, I had to stay quiet about my sympathy toward the androids, as I've heard rumors of owners abusing them. It didn't help that this Gavin Reed guy seemed to take a lot of pride in despising what is perhaps humanity's greatest creation, but he was simply one of many I did my best to ignore.

However, it's been nearly a year since I joined the crew and made my name known in the building for the "skill" set I had brought to the table—sarcasm, kindness, consideration, empathy, wit, and knowing...for the most part...when to shut my mouth.

I'm currently sitting at my desk when lieutenant Hank Anderson is called over by the captain, Jeffrey Fowler, in a rather frustrated tone. Out of curiosity, I edge my body an inch or so to the right so I can see past my screen, and I see the captain's eyes on me as he waits for Anderson to hobble up from his desk to the office.

"Miss (L/N), you're needed as well," he calls out, but in a much less agitated voice. Instantly, I scoot my chair back and stand up, adjusting my shirt along the way. Just as I get to the end of swarm of work desks, Reed rounds the corner and spots me.

"Oh hey (F/N), you in trouble?" the man snickers. He holds a cup of coffee in his hand while the other sways with every step he takes in my direction.

Casting a half-assed glance and smile his way, I exhale and reply, "No, Mr. Reed, I am not."

"C'mon now, (F/N), you don't have to be so formal with me. We've got that date to..."

"I'm sorry, Mr. Reed, but I won't be able to make it to that date." Without giving him so much as another glance, I step forward and make my way up the steps to the captain's office. I can feel Reed's eyes on me the entire time, although it probably isn't out of anger or frustration considering this is the seventh time he's made an attempt like this.

Once I've entered the captain's office, I go and sit down next to Anderson. The atmosphere in such a small room has never felt so...constricting, and I urge myself to look only at my hands as my fingers twiddle and tangle together.

"Hank, (L/N)," Fowler starts. I listen to the sound of typing on a keyboard coming to a halt alongside his clothes rustling as he turns toward us. At this point I cast my gaze upward and nod my head at him, to which he does the same in my direction before setting his now steely gaze on the man to my left. "I called you both in here to announce that you will be working together on just a few future cases regarding androids going haywire. There aren't too many at the moment, but seeing as there are already three that have come in within the past few days, it seems best to put you two together to work on them."

Instantly, Anderson scoffs. "What? Jeffrey, I am not about to sit my ass down with another person because I am just fine by myself, and I'm not going to work with said other person on walking talking pieces of plastic!"

Oh jeez, here we go, I think to myself. On almost a weekly basis the captain and Anderson get into a verbal brawl. With all due respect towards the two, it's bad enough having to try and ignore them as their yells reach more than halfway across the entire office, but to now be here next to the two? I might actually go deaf.

After a good ten to fifteen minutes of insisting and pleading laced intricately with every foul word known to man and android alike, Fowler somehow silences the lieutenant just long enough to speak. "Hank, I am not changing my mind on this. If you really don't want to work with (L/N) on this, you can hand me your badge. You are going to work with her and you are going to get your job done effectively and efficiently. Do I make myself clear?" By the time the captain reaches the end of his conclusion, the look on his face has gone from mildly annoyed to illustrating how much he wants to strangle Anderson.
