" So, I have something I need to ask you about." Jason hummed, smiling fondly at me. He looked beautiful. Sunlight was bleeding in through the curtains, lighting up Jason's face as he laid beside me on the bed, torso exposed. Last night we had talked about a lot, what we were and if we were happy to tell people. I giggled, rolling over so I was straddling his waist, noses pressed together. " What would that be my wonderful boyfriend?" I said happily. A deep chuckle escaped his lips as he grabbed my hands with his, locking our fingers together. " Well, it's my Nan's birthday today. My mum's throwing a surprise party and she said I could bring someone, would you like to come?"

I couldn't help but grin, he wanted me to meet his family, and of course I wanted to go. " I'd love to go." Jason kissed his lips to mine softly, it was sweet and quick but it meant so much more. My life had started to become a novel, of some sort. Sure, it probably wouldn't have a happy ending, life never did. But I could enjoy that time with Jason, appreciate every second until it ended. If it ever ended. " Good, what time is it?" Jason asked, voice deep and gravely, this just made me giggle.  I reached over and tilted his alarm clock to face me, squinting my eyes. " Just gone 10 o'clock, we should probably get up." I was already starting to make plans about what I would wear, what I would buy as a gift and what I would say.

That morning had been pleasant. I had bought Jason's Nan a bouquet of different flowers, chocolates and a card signed by both me and Jason. My outfit just consisted of a white vest top with Jason's blue shirt, unbuttoned, slung over my frame, grey skinny jeans and white converse. " Are you sure I look okay?" I asked Jason quickly, fixing my hair in the rearview mirror as Jason pulled out his driveway, chuckling. " You look perfect." Dan and Jasmine were still at Jason's, we'd left them snuggled up under a fur blanket, a Disney movie playing softly in the background. It was honestly the cutest thing I had every seen in my life. " I can't wait to meet your family, I bet they're awesome. I mean, they must be.  Look at you! " I couldn't help but ramble, I really was excited.  Before Jason could reply, my phone buzzed meaning someone had text me. " Probably just Dan," I mumbled.

[ From: Dale] Hey. I don't know if you're still mad at me, I mean, I hope you're not. I just wanted to say I'm sorry. I don't mean to baby you, but I'm worried. I always have been. You'll always be that little boy that looked to me to protect him. You're my best friend, nothing is going to change that. I need you, Patty. I miss seeing you every day, seeing you smile. You make me feel like I've done a good job. I don't want a relationship, I want our friendship back.

My smile only grew as I read Dale's text. I knew he meant every word and I felt the same. Dale was the only true friend that I had ever had, that was always there. I felt as though I hadn't really appreciated what Dale had done for me and needed to think of a way to say thank you. " Who's got you smiling that much?" Jason hummed, tapping his fingers gently against the steering wheel. " Just Dale. We've sorted things out."

[ To: Dale] I love you.

" Oh I didn't know you argued. Well, you know I'm always here for you babe." Jason was almost like a dream. I often wondered if he was a figment of my imagination, he was just that perfect. But the world was full of surprises. Jason was just the kind of person anyone would want to be. He was always kind, there for anyone, wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty and balanced his hobbies and education well. And to say that he was my boyfriend was possibly the best feeling in the world.

" Oh honey! Who's this cutie? I'm Barbra, nice to meet you. And you young boy, give your Mum a kiss." Jason's mum was exactly how I pictured her to be. Barbra had light crystal eyes that were large & soft, light brown hair that was cut just above her shoulders and very few wrinkles. I could already tell that she was an extremely loving person, must have been where Jason got it from. Jason unravelled his arm from my waist, hugging his mum softly as he pressed a soft kiss to her cheek. " Hi Mum. This is Patty," He introduced me, pulling back and securing his arm around my waist once again. I blushed lightly as Barbra's eyes landed on me, a fond smile on her cheeks. " Aw, hello dear. Now both of you come inside, the whole family is in the backyard."

I nodded softly, smiling as me and Jason made our way through their cosy house. Across the wall there was cute family pictures taken from various places, ornaments that looked like they were from all over the world littered any free space it could and children's art worked was pinned to a large cork board. It was nice. It was homely. My childhood mainly consisted of time spent getting lectured about what was right & wrong, who we were allowed to talk to and not to tell on our Dad. I remember that the most. My mum pinned me up against my bedroom wall, shelf digging into the skin of my back as books and toys clattered to the ground. She had told me that if I breathed a word about what my Dad had done, she'd kill me and Louise. I gulped as Barbra opened the doors leading to the back garden.

" A strong body used to be a sign of either excessive leisure time or a professional athlete. Who else had time for it? Now it's just a necessity. If you can't run, you're dead. If you can't jump a low level wall without reducing speed you're dead. If you can't make your own weapon and fight with it...well, you get the idea. I used to be a desk-jockey living on caffeine and craving high sugar, high fat, high salt. I struggled against the bulge like everyone else and bought magazines that shamed me and advertised my addictions at the same time. Now that fat is hard muscle. This girl that used to pant to climb the stairs is now the fastest scout in the enclave. I've never gone toe to toe with an adversary because they just can't keep up but I can best almost everyone in training, even the men. I've lost everything I thought made my life bearable and I'm more alive than ever. I don't fear wars in far off lands or a virus outbreak thousands of miles away. I just live each day and I'm happy."

Cheerful laughter aroused as a few people shuffled to reveal a small, shrunken women hunched up in a chair. " That's nice Grandma, but all I said was you were looking well." The small lady waved her hand, tutting as her eyes wandered before settling on Jason; a grin found its way to her face. Though she was old, anyone could tell that she was a pretty women. Her thick, grey hair was pulled back tightly into a bun, a knitted white shawl draped over her shoulders and circle rimmed glasses perched on the end of her nose. " Jason, my hum bug! Look how big you've gotten. Who's this young chap?" She asked, gesturing us over. I smiled as he walked over to Jason's grandma, laying the flowers on her lap. " I'm Patty, it's nice to meet you m'am."  She just chuckled, shaking her head as Jason laughed along with her. " M'am? Boy, you've got yourself a good one here Jason. Don't let him go. Just call me Pat," Pat said, voice slightly strained as her finger tips danced over the flower petals.

Before I could say anything else, I was being dragged towards a large blossom tree that stood proudly in the center of the garden.  " My  family is a little crazy aha." Jason said smoothly, wrapping his arms around my waist and held me close to his chest, kissing me softly.

For the next few hours we flitted around, chatting happily to different members of Jason's family before he led me up to his old bedroom. " Just to warn you, I haven't been in this room since I was like fourteen." He chuckled. On the door in front of me was a large stop sign that had nailed to the door with the words ' no girls allowed' carved into the wood. I laughed at the thought of a mini Jason, a determined look on his face, as he carved the words into the wood. He must have thought he was so macho. Jason twisted the brass knob with his large hand, the door slowly falling open, revealing Jason's old room. The walls were plastered with posters from various indie bands all over the world, it was dark with only two bedside lamps casting the room in a yellow glow and in the corner of the room stood a wooden guitar.  I raised my eyebrow as I sat on the edge of Jason's bed, looking around. " Wow. This room is actually awesome Jason."

I laughed as Jason moved so he was hovering over me, noses brushing against each other. " You know Patrick Jay Mc'Donald, it's getting rather late." He said in a teasing tone, making me smile. The radio was humming gently in the background, lights dimmed and us both in our boxers.  " Aw. But Mr Davis, I don't want to go to sleep." I breathed, nipping at his bottom lip softly. Something changed in his eyes as he began pressing loving kisses down my jawline and across my neck, my body reacting immediately. I shivered, catching my bottom lip between my teeth. " This is going to be a fun night." Jason breathed into my neck.
