Chanyeol truly thought he had it all.
He was handsome and kind, after all. He had yet to come across someone who hadn't fallen for him yet.
And then he met Baekhyun.
Not many people liked Baekhyun. He always wore black, barely combed his hair and skipped the majority of his classes despite being on campus most of the time.
He creeped people out, too.
Always in his corner, taking pictures of anything and everything.
Always watching.
Chanyeol had never spoken to him, and he had hoped to keep things that way. Until that one fateful day.
"Yah, Park Chanyeol!"
The boy turned around to look at the source of the voice in confusion, only to see the small outcast, blankly staring up at him while holding out an envelope, his camera hanging around his neck.
"Professor Lee asked me to give this to you."
He didn't know what had come over him during that moment, but Chanyeol had felt a sudden spark of interest. During that moment, Baekhyun wasn't just a random weirdo everyone avoided— he was another student, another human, simply running an around for his favourite teacher.
"Ah, yes, she did bring that up..." Chanyeol muttered a bit absentmindedly before smiling politely. "Thank you."
"It's whatever. Nice hat, by the way."
Chanyeol had made it a point to wear that hat as often as possible since.
Still, it seemed like ever since that interaction, the world had worked to intentionally keep the two apart.
Chanyeol would try to approach Baekhyun only to be interrupted by a nosy friend or a phone call... or sometimes a squirrel suddenly attacking his shoe.
But it was okay. He would find a way, he knew it.
And now he finally had his chance.
Baekhyun was just minding his own business, simply eating his lunch at an empty picnic table. Empty of any visible emotion, like usual.
With his famous charming smile, Chanyeol casually waltzed over and sat next to him, confidently looking at the bored male with his head resting on his fist.
"How's it going, pretty boy?"
"Can you not? I'm trying to eat my sandwich."
"You can eat your sandwich whenever, but talking to me is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Have you never dreamt of socializing with the marvellous Park Chanyeol~?"
Baekhyun raised an eyebrow, unimpressed. "I'd rather eat my sandwich, thanks."
"Ah, so cold!" Chanyeol exclaimed dramatically, leaning back with his hand placed over his chest as though he'd been shot.
Baekhyun just blinked, showing no reaction at all. Feeling his face heat up, Chanyeol laughed nervously, confused and embarrassed. No one ever behaved this way around him, especially when he goofed off— usually, everyone loved that side of him, and encouraged it.
"You know what? Keep eating your sandwich," Chanyeol muttered awkwardly, almost falling over when he got back up.
Baekhyun, still blankly staring.
As he walked off, Chanyeol couldn't believe or understand what had just happened. Not only had Baekhyun not even smiled at him, but Chanyeol felt humiliated, too— that never happened. No matter how much the cheerful giant ridiculed himself, he always walked off proudly and happily, so why was he like this now, red-faced and wanting to hide under a rock?
Thinking about it only motivated him, though.
He would win Baekhyun over, no matter how much awkward joking and small talk it took.
