Hold Me While You Wait
she was running. bandaid's stuck to her busted kneecap, shoe laces untied.
at seven years old, you appreciate the little things. things like the butterflies fluttering through bushes, how fluffy the clouds were.
you know, sometimes, they say kids are the best at reading feelings. they're innocence amplifies the ability to tell our emotions. the same could be referenced for young lauren hendrickson.
across the playground, sniffles were heard near the cluster of oak trees. she turned her head slightly to acknowledge the small boy crying behind her. she stood up, the pebbles on the floor shuffling with the loss of contact. with fly aways plastered on her forehead, she approached the little boy with the upturned nose and whiskey eyes.
"what's wrong?" she questioned thrusting into the sandpit alongside him.
his eyes adverted from the tattered sandcastle in front of him and up towards the young girl. with tears burning in his irises, he avoided her gaze and returned his own to the pile of sand.
"they- they smushed my- my castle."
his head lifted and tilted towards the clan of older boys. the youngster observed the boy with heavy eyes and for some reason, a reason to this day that is still unknow, she hated to see him cry. she didn't know the sensitive little bastard, but the girl saw something in him. something extraordinary. so she did only what the bravest and baddest could do... approach them.
"wh- where are you going?" his panicky tone turned to fright. "no! don't go they'll just do it again." he sighed.
"don't worry, they won't bother you again" she squeaked, trying to reassure herself that the boys won't try anything. who knows what the scary 10 year olds were capable of.
"hey!" she pouted, catching the attention of the older boys. "yeah you guys! leave my friend alone! or- or else" she puffed, questioning her choice of words.
"or- or else you'll what? call my mommy? okay kiddo, i'm really scared." the tall boy sarcastically remarked, causing the rest of the clan to errupt in laughter.
with an angry sigh, she further approached the tall one, and looked him straight in the eye.
"why are you at this park?" she notioned towards the tall boy, who momentarily discontinued his laughter to meet her eyes.
the somewhat invalid question threw him of "what do you mean?" he scoffed, eyeing his friends and noticing their confusion.
"i just mean, I'm just really surprised you like nature so much, despite what it did you." she narrowed her eyes and the clan, minus the tall boy emitted a series of 'oohs' and 'oh damn'.
before he could butt in, she made sure to have the last words, "if you ever, so much as lay a hand on his sand castle, you will wish you never did." she readjusted her gaze, now staring back at the small boy whom she'd yet to learn his name.
then, with a twist of her heel, the girl's ponytail smacked the tall boy as she returned to the distraught, sobbing one.
"they won't bother you again, i made sure of it." with a toothy smile, she jumped into the sandpit and began to rebuild the broken masterpiece. "let's make it even bigger this time!" she exlaimed, pawing sand through her stubby fingers.

Hold Me While You Wait{DYLAN OBRIEN}
Diversosbest friends; what an innocent concept. but it's never really that easy, is it? Maybe they weren't meant to be, or maybe time was just too cruel to them. Why do the one's we want never want us back? Or maybe they're just so oblivious to our feelings...
