Ridley Scott almost designed the Daleks

The future director of Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator was working as a designer at the BBC in the early Sixties, and was the man originally assigned to the episode that introduced the Daleks. But when the time rolled round, Scott had left for Granada to train as a director, so the job fell to Raymond Cusick instead. Unlike his collaborator, the scriptwriter Terry Nation, Cusick didn't get a share of the merchandising royalties when Dalekmania gripped Britain. On leaving the corporation in 1966, he got £100 and a Blue Peter badge.
