"You will, I'm sure," you smiled at him, your chest growing warm with admiration.

"I'm so happy to know you're going to be living with us now, (Y/N)!" Al's cheerful voice made your worries dissipate.

"Thank you, Al. I am so happy to be here with all of you too."

"Right, brother? You always talk about how talented (Y/N) is with medicinal herbs and how much-"

Ed glared at his brother, "Oi! Stop making stuff up-"

"Ed and I are very happy you're here, (Y/N). He is just too scared to-"

"Lunch is served, children," Pinako called.

You grinned at the two brothers, "I am happy to be here with you, Al and also Winry. Not so much Ed."

"OI. (Y/N)!"

"Catch me, Shorty!"

"I WILL KILL YOU."

Winry giggled at her friends who were now family. She would ensure that they all found true happiness.

"I will always be here, (Y/N). You're my family," Winry said to you as you lay awake that night.

"Thank you, Winry," you smiled at your friend.

Holding her hand, you were able to fall asleep on that tough night.

Present day

Staring out of the huge window in the lobby of your current hotel, you thought of your friends back home.

Edward Elric.

What would he be doing right now?

Did he ever think of you? 

What was it with your head, heart and Edward Elric? Why did he constantly appear in your thoughts, clinging to your ideas of betterment and making you dream of a brighter future? Would he and Al be okay?

Did Ed ever think of you?

The leather-bound journal lay closed in your lap. You were supposed to be reviewing all the new information you had gathered about the alchemy of healing, yet here you were dreaming of a certain hot-tempered short boy.

Opening the last page of the journal, you mindlessly scrawled, and then cut out.

You shook your head, mentally chiding yourself, "Focus! Focus! You came all the way to the North to study about herbs and the alchemy of healing. Not think about that short idiot!"

I have to work hard and become better, you thought to yourself, lugubriously. Otherwise, I am no match for him!

This was your constant thought cycle. Becoming better so you could at least consider yourself on the same case of stairs as Ed. He was the top rung; shining, bright and complete. Whilst, all you thought yourself to be was the lowest rung. Too far away and never in the same race as him.

Edward Elric felt too out of your league. "I cannot even think of him ever considering me," you sighed.

And you began to revise.

Winter had finally made an appearance and you could finally return home, at last done with your research about herbs and alchemy. You were finally free now.
