How did I find myself in front of a mirror every single morning? And not just a quick glance at my face, but a scrutinising examination. Today, there's nothing new. The same chin-length straight-as-hell generic light brown hair. The old nondescript plain grey eyes. The small nose, studded with orange spots they call freckles, and the bland, makeup-less mouth.
I hear padding behind me, and I soon see another face in the mirror. Lorie, my twin and both literal and figurative soulsister allows herself a small, satisfied smile as she cocks her head and lets her moviestar-gorgeous, albeit artificially styled, artfully highlighted wavy hair spill onto her shoulder. It grants me no small comfort to know that these dream tresses were originally no different to my own. Her eyes are a more thoughtful, deep grey and framed and enlarged by carefully drawn black lines and lashes. Her nose is cute while mine is prim, lips full and pink while mine are flat.
"Are you ready, Eunice?" she sings, voice soaring and crystal clear. "First day of freaking Year 10!"
"I guess," I shrug, and sling my bag over my shoulder. Eunice has been her pet name for me since Year 7, when we first started watching Sindercombe on Netflix. It was our favourite show for so long, and even though Lorie's moved on, I'm still stuck in awe. Anyway, in Sindercombe, Harry's girlfriend Jean has a pet mouse called Eunice. It just so happens that Eunice is my own middle name, so Lorie's affectionately called me after a mouse ever since. "Are we going on the bus?" I call after my sister, who's already retreated into the hallway, glued to her Instagram feed.
She turns to me, beaming dazzlingly. "Oh no, darling," she purred. (She calls everyone darling now. It drives me crazy) "We're being picked up."
Right on cue, the door opens. And all of my questions - "who by?", "how come?" - vanish from my tongue. Because, standing in front of me, whose mouth is open ready to ask them, is none other than Aidan Lakes.
Captain of the football team. Lorie's beautiful boyfriend.
And, may I add, the boy I've always had a huge- no, gigantic - crush on.
Shoot.
