We went home after the big art thing at the lake, and Chip came over after school.
The main reason Chip came over was 'cause I told him my mom had made a batch of her chocolate chip cookies.
But once he'd had his fill, I had him come down to our secret headquarters (a.k.a. HQ, a.k.a. my basement).
And once he was downstairs, I sat him down and shined a glaring spotlight in his face! Yes, he was my best friend, but there were some things I just had to know.
"Did you tell Gert von Brugen about the microthingy on the back of your false tooth?!" I demanded.
Chip was caught totally off guard. "N-no!" he stuttered, the mess of chocolate chips on his mouth melting under the hot light.
Hmm, he sounded nervous. Maybe he was lying. But Chip never lied. I don't think he even knew how to. I decided to move on to the next question. "Did you tell her you can become anyone I program you to be at a moment's notice?!"
"No!"
He was pretty quick with his answer that time. Probably telling the truth. But . . . since Chip didn't know how to lie, maybe he'd told Gert the truth when she was pestering him with her questions!
Or maybe he'd just said nothing.
Panicking, I blurted out, "Did you tell her I was out fishing with my dad?!"
Chip broke down. "Yes! Yes! I admit it!" he sobbed.
"Well . . . that was okay, I guess," I said. I apologized to Chip and gave him another cookie.
