Ding.
A clear bell sound rang once before a flash blinded her. When the young girl finally managed to reopen her eyes, her surroundings had somehow changed. Alice gasped as she straightened her spine, looking wide-eyed at the small grey room she was in. It was bare and desolate but more than she could have ever hoped for who knows how long.
Tears of happiness fell from Alice's eyes and she wiped them away when the mechanical voice spoke once more. She didn't know where it came from as she was the only one in the room, but then again, it didn't matter much.
"This is the receiving room where you will read about the clients' applications. Choose one of the three requests and once you complete the job, you will be rewarded by soul points. Once you have gathered 1.000.000 soul points, you will be granted one wish."
Alice didn't really understand everything, but the strange voice didn't sound anything close to a human's or approachable so she refrained from asking too much, afraid that one moment she would wake up from this surreal dream and return to that haunting place.
"Yes, I understand. Thank you very much!" She nodded eagerly, watching as three sheets of papers appeared in front of her. She didn't waste any second before reading the first one, holding it with a vice-like grip, her eyes running over the inked words greedily.
Client's name: Olivia Wesley
Age: 48
Cause of death: Alcohol intoxication
Request: Making her parents proud, finishing University, being financially stable
Payment: 120/200 soul points
Alice's brows furrowed in confusion as she wondered how exactly she'd accomplish her missions. Was she going to be something like a guardian angel and guide the tasker to achieve their goals or directly relive their lives as her own?
"Um, System 505?" Timidly, the girl called out. "Can I please ask some questions?" Relief flooded into her when the robotic voice answered 'yes'.
"What will happen after I choose a task?" She asked curiously.
"Host 108 will be transferred to the client's body at a random time and their memories shall be given to you immediately in order for you to fittingly act as themselves. Host 108 may, of course, act out of character but not to the point that the people around you will suspect of something drastically amiss."
A random time? Olivia was 48 years old, so unless she ended up during her school years, it'd be really difficult to pay for the university fees by herself. And there was also the matter of living expenses, food expenses, water, gas and light bills...And much more other stuff that demanded money.
Alice knew well the importance of money as her mother had been a single parent with three kids to provide for.
She didn't know much about the adult's world but she did know that not many would be willing to hire an uneducated woman so her options would be severely limited to that of cleaning services, restaurant jobs and...??? Uhm...
Alice reached for the remaining sheets, reading them attentively.
Client's name: Fan He
Age: 15
Cause of death: Falling down the stairs
Request: Becoming a famous celebrity, marrying a rich and handsome man
Payment: 150/200 soul points
Client's name: Tatiana Abramova
Age: 21
Cause of death: Miscarriage
Request: Winning an Olympic gold medal
Payment: 190/200 soul points
Miscarriage? From what Alice knew, dying from miscarriage wasn't possible unless the woman hadn't been immediately taken to the hospital and been treated. How sad, but her payment though...
"Why is some payment higher than others?"
"It is because of the amount of regret they died with and thus their desire to have them realized. The more regretful they are, the more willing they are to sell a higher amount of their soul."
"And these soul points are important to them because...?" They couldn't be hosts too, since accumulating 1 million SP didn't seem to have much importance to them. Or maybe she was somehow wrong?
"It is necessary to have an intact soul to pass onto the next life." Oh, now she understood. They placed the present as more important than the future, so they must have thought of something along the lines of 'I don't know what the next life will bring me, but I do know what I want in this life'.
Who knows? Alice didn't really care, anyway. She almost asked why she wasn't given this option, but soon after realized the answer by herself. Unlike the three of them, she didn't have any dreams. Well, if you didn't count 'being happy' as a dream, which she didn't.
Alice did want to be happy, but she wasn't strong. She wasn't like those book characters that could stand up again and again despite the obstacles fate (coughauthorcough) threw their way. She just couldn't do it, not anymore. She'd been tired but after the abyss...she'd do anything to not return to that place. Plus, she missed her family.
Objectively speaking, the third case was the better job. The payment was the highest and the request wasn't unreasonable. Buuut! The baby. If she had to abort, she'd do it. After all, Tatiana's request was to win the Olympics and pregnancy would impede her training and even after childbirth, it would be more than difficult to regain the same capability her body possessed.
Would that be possible in the first place? It would be pretty heartless to place her dreams - or in Alice's case, her mission - before the baby. And some athletes were like celebrities too, right? It wouldn't be good for her reputation if it came out.
All of this would be resolved if it happened before Tatiana became pregnant, but then again, what if it had been rape? And worst-case scenario, what if she was transferred over during that time? Just thinking about it made her nauseous and scared.
Of course, it was only a small chance that of all times it'd be that moment, but Alice didn't want to risk it. She didn't think she could go on after such a frightening event.
"System 505, what would happen if I were unable to accomplish my task?" She questioned as she pressed her hands to her chest to stop her trembling. She could almost hear her raging heartbeat. Almost, she was dead after all.
"Host 108 will be returned to where she had originally been."
The cold, unfeeling voice spoke what she already knew and Alice knew, that no matter what, she had to succeed. There were no buts. Never had she been more motivated to succeed than now.
"I made my choice," She said determinedly, inhaling a deep breath to calm her nerves and slowly letting it out. "I choose Fan He's task."
