Berthen's P.O.V

Class went not quite fun as they usually do, starting with Social Studies. Let me not bore you with the details of how lessons went. But school ended and that's the part of school I find most interesting. Though I don't find school as fun others as do and probably not really a teacher's favourite kind of a student I do my best make both my parents and I proud.

"Are you set", I heard Ewura say interrupting my thoughts, as she headed towards my desk with her backpack already behind her back while resting her hands on her.
backpack strap.

"Almost, I'm very exhausted ", I yawned and quickly dumped my books inside my bag, throwing it over one shoulder we walked out of our classroom.

We joined the school bus and got In the backseat, I had even forgotten about Pete and Pea. Well I'm the youngest but I worry about them more than they do about themselves.
A bunch of students rushed in to fill the bus, now the bus is almost full but as I looked through the windows I could still see a lot of students trying to force their way into the bus. I guess I'm not the only one in a haste for school to end.

Pea was one of the students forcing her way to get into the bus. I was to tired to laugh at her now but I'll make sure to laugh at her before the day ends or at home. I pray she doesn't make it into the bus upon all her struggle. And this time the odds were in my favour, the bus has already taken more than its capacity so adding Pea and some other students will be too much for the bus to be able to move. I'm even finding it hard to breathe because there's no space left for ventilation, the air in the bus is stale filled with sweat and hot breaths. Poor students who couldn't enter except Pea (remember I'm still mad at her), because they'll have to wait for the bus to go and make it rounds and return.

'Or you meant to rather say , lucky them for having fresh air to breath in', my conscience reminded.

Now Pea will have to walk home because knowing her so well, she hardly joined the bus if she had extra money for transportation. She claims it's faster and classier that way. Who cares about class when it comes to how you get home? And she is always in a haste, besides it's just four in the evening or afternoon, what is she in a hurry to do anyway? Pete would not be coming home till around seven in the evening because he has extra class since he is in his final year of senior high school.

The ride on our way home was a noisy and a short one unlike this morning's ride. You can't enjoy that much tranquility in shared vehicles. At least now there was fresh air, though it immediately got stained with the smell of sweat when it enters the bus. Luckily I was by the window so I had a feel of the fresh air better. Ewura and I didn't have much to say till we got to her stop and waved each other goodbye, in about three minutes time, we got to my stop. I got off the bus and headed towards my house about a minute walk from the bus stop.

I expected to get to a quiet and lonely home since my mother will be arriving late in the evening about two hours time but today turned out to be the once in a blue moon kind of days; I noticed our family car in the driveway and I was happy. I'll be having a five o'clock dinner.

"Good evening mama", I greeted in delight shouting to her hearing wherever she was while I threw my bag in one of the couches. I followed the beatiful aroma with my eyes closed and my nose leading me to the kitchen .

"Good evening Berth, how was school today?", she asked turning to look at me as I entered the kitchen, where she stood by the island cutting some vegetables .

"School today was like any other day , nothing special", I stated with a neutral facial expression as I walked closer to her.

She just chuckled and asked, "Where is Pea".

"She missed the bus ", I simply stated.

"Oh my poor daughter", she said. I nearly sneered at her statement then she added, "She's under punishment with hard labour, what time will she get home and finish the pile of chores I've listed for her to do".

I was laughing hysterically now. I was not going to end this laughter anytime soon. I wiped a tear drop that was hanging on the corner of my right eye out. I was laughing out of sheer joy. I was laughing because of my mother's statement and I was happy because Pea is under punishment with hard labour. The day got better eventually.

"Seriously mama, so the only reason you pity your daughter for missing the bus is because you are worried she will not be able to finish her household chores on time, I thought you were even worried about how she will get home", I said.

"Yeah I am , and instead of lecturing me on how to be a good mother, how about asking me for your list of chores to make things even quicker", she chided.
Her last statement made my face drop.

"Oh Berth where did your smile go",she mocked.

"Oh mama let me tell you what happened".

I explained what happened in our room last night and when I was done she said,

"Okay, you'll be under punishment for just today for telling your sister you hate her ",and she added,

"Help me with the veggies and clean the kitchen and wash the dishes when I'm done".

She finished cooking in about thirty minutes and I did as she she had asked me to.

Pea arrived after I had washed down; my mother and I were having dinner. I didn't have time to laugh at her as I planned because I was really enjoying the rice dish my mother prepared.

The rest of the days- Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday passed by with the same routine, nothing special.

It's Saturday and we were having dinner when we heard a car honk from outside our house.
It was my father's car. We rushed to welcome him leaving our food . He bought us gifts - I got a teddy bear and chocolates, now someone should tell Ewura to take back her words, everything in a form of a gift from my family did not involve flowers only. Pea had a new beige lace-up high wedge heel, and my brother had a snicker.

Pea's shoe.

I loved the teddy bear and I loved chocolates too. I was happy because it's been three weeks since I saw him.

After we settled, Pea and Pete were in his room while I sat in the living room with my parents, my mother announced to my father my intention involving the story I wanted to write.

"A tragedy, again", said my father surprised and he seemed not happy about it either.

Here we go again, 'again', did he say 'again'?, come to think of it he said 'again'. But this is even my first time I'm writing a book like that. So why 'again'. Why did he say 'again'?.
