Chapter Twenty Nine

Wait...

Something clicked in my brain and my blood turned cold.

I slowly turned to face the chief, who was whistling some cheery tune, unaware of his mistake.

"I...never told you this was happening at the school." I said, heart pounding.

Instantly I realized my own mistake- I never should have called him out.

Suddenly my head was knocked backwards, slamming against the window so hard it cracked. Blood spurted from my nose, definitely broken, and I was disoriented, blinking back tears and trying to get my brain working again.

Got to get out- have to get out of here-

All without looking at me, Hirabayashi had elbowed me directly in the face, still whistling.

"You really are a smart little bitch, Asano." He said, his smile still there but his voice was dripping with venom.

I fumbled for the door handle, nevermind that the car was still going seventy miles per hour down the freeway, but the chief locked the doors before I could chance an escape.

"Ah ah ah," He chuckled. "Boss would kill me if you went and got yourself killed before the grand reveal." He grabbed my jaw harshly with his free hand and studied my face. "Hm, we should put some ice on that."

I slapped his hand away and unclipped my seatbelt, desperate to get out of the car and away from the man who betrayed me, but he was stronger and grabbed my arm, holding me in place. "Now, Asano, don't start making stupid decisions now. You're outmatched here, so just sit still and I won't have to mess up that pretty face anymore."

"You fucking monster!" I shouted, rage engulfing me. "You're supposed to protect the public! How long have you been working for the other side?"

"You know that 'spy' you mentioned? The one you thought was your father?" He chuckled. "You were a little off the mark there, son."

So much new information and theories flooded my brain, and I was overwhelmed.

With a scream, I lunged for the wheel, grabbing it with both hands and yanking it to the side.

Hirabayashi let out a cry of surprise at my attack and swore loudly, wrenching the wheel the other way and we swerved in traffic, making cars honk and swerve to avoid us.

I could hear the sound of cars crashing into each other around us, and the radio crackled loudly, "Multiple accidents reported on the main freeway, ambulances dispatched, all units respond."

"You fucking shit," Hirabayashi roared, finally regaining control of the car and shoving me back. "Look what you've done! You just made this much more difficult than it had to be!"

"Fuck you!" I yelled. "This is all your fault! How could you?! What are they doing to Karma?"

"If I was you, I wouldn't worry about your little boy toy," He said in a low voice, pulling off the road to a secluded spot by the woods. My heart pounded faster and I got chills down my spine when I recognized where we were. Back at the school- he was never even taking me to the prison. "I would worry about yourself."

He lunged without warning, grabbing my shoulders and slamming me against the window so hard it shattered.

I cried out in pain, seeing nothing but blood and broken glass all around me. Pain exploded throughout my body, and I slumped weakly in my seat, feeling the blood run down my face like water.

Move-get out- find Karma- get medical attention-don't trust anybody anymore-

I could hear the car door open and slam shut, the sound of footsteps over broken glass, and then my door opened and I was dragged out.
