I wrote this story nearly 5 years ago now, and was too embarrassed/never got around to publishing it (I can only assume it was that I never got around to it, because Skiing in Companionship is FAR more embarrassing, and I published that).
I suddenly remembered today that Wattpad exists and cringed to myself as I looked through Skiing in Companionship, then read this, which has a very different vibe. I was only 15 when I wrote it, and many of the topics in it I hadn't ever actually encountered first-hand - like relationships, drugs and alcohol - and was just writing about from reading about them elsewhere, or from my imagination.
Reading it again now, I feel an enormous sense of énouement - a word I discovered recently, which refers to "the bittersweet feeling of having arrived in the future and seeing how things turn out, without being able to tell your past self". I've encountered those topics now, and it was truly weird seeing them from my younger self's point of view, but in fiction. I know that no one else will feel this the same way I did, and that no one even goes on this website anymore, but I wanted to publish it anyway, because I miss 15-year-old me and this feels like bringing her back somewhat.
Hope you enjoy!
