II: First Practice

It's funny how sometimes you find yourself in exactly the right place at exactly the right time and then everything changes... Okay that's a little dramatic, I'll explain. It's my senior year. You already know that. And everybody knows of the infamous senior prank. It's supposed to be something a little more harmless than not and a little more legal than illegal. And for everyone that might not be familiar with the senior prank... it's supposed to happen at the end of the year. A little goodbye gift for your school. Got it? Well yeah, that's not how things work at our school. Senior year is a full on prank war between Glenview and Johnson Creek, our rival school, and to be completely honest, I wanted nothing to do with it. But things don't always go the way we plan.

"What the actual-" an air horn cut off the rest of whatever Lilly was about to say. We were sitting in the library during sixth period and the sprinklers had started going off. Very quickly, me, Lilly, and the papers we had been working on became soaking wet.

There were a few other people sitting in the library with us. One of them being Matthew Logan, Jason's best friend, and Sabrina Millard, Matthew's girlfriend. They were the type of dysfunctional couple that had kind of been dating since the sixth grade but also kind of broke up every other month and nobody could tell if they were actually madly in love and destined to get married or growing apart and just together out of habit and convenience until they went to college. They looked pretty unhappy that their little study date had been interrupted by the waterworks.

There were some other underclassmen in the library studying, but as far as I could tell, we were the only seniors in the room. Most seniors who had sixth period study hall just went out to lunch and stayed out until seventh, but Lilly and I typically liked to spend at least half of it working on our homework.

Matthew ran over to the window that faced the parking lot and began cursing very colorfully. The only part I really caught of it was "Johnson Creek" and that was when I realized we'd been pranked. Matthew whipped his phone out of his pocket and began furiously texting as Lilly and I worked to get the stuff that hadn't been soaked already into our backpacks and under the table. After that, we both ran for the exit and burst into the hallway dripping wet and saw some of the senior boys running down the hall and outside.

With one look at each other we took off following them into the parking lot where there were a couple of cars peeling away. There, spray painted on the ground in the Johnson Creek signature blue was a messy scrawl reading 'That was just the beginning'. I don't think there is enough soap in the world to wash out the mouths for all the words that followed.

I heard Matthew who must've followed us outside of the library, "Damn it, we let them get the fucking drop on us."

I turned around to see him and Sabrina standing just a few steps behind me and Lilly. The four of us stood out amongst the others as we were the only ones who were sopping wet. As soon as he said this, Paul and Reid burst through the doors and ran straight up to me and Lilly.

"What the hell happened to you guys?" Paul asked, barely struggling to contain his laughter.

"The freaking Johnson Creek people set off the sprinklers in the library!" Lilly shrieked. "We can't let them just get away with this! All of the books in there are ruined! Or at least they'll be extremely wrinkly assuming they actually dry, and who do they think they are soaking us like this? Jerks."

It was then that I noticed that Jason was also outside, whispering with Matthew with an angry look on his face and glancing over in our direction every few seconds. Finally, he rolled his eyes, stepped back, and followed Matthew as he approached the four of us.

"Paul, Reid," He acknowledged. The two of them stepped to the side, allowing him, Jason and Sabrina to round out our little circle. "Lilly, Sydney... obviously, this calls for payback."
