*YOUR POV*

I took long strides to the DX but squinted slightly because the sun was in my eyes.

The Tulsa summer sun was half blinding when you didn't look directly at it, imagine if you had.

Anyways, I needed a new pack of cancer sticks.

It doesn't bother Darry none because I barely smoke 2 cigarettes a day.

Sure, I needed another pack but I also wanted to see Steve. The cigarettes were just my excuse to talk to Steve.

I coulda asked Soda to get me a pack but he was at home, sick.

I know I sound like those girls who come up with ways to flirt with Steve and Soda but I actually like Steve. It ain't just physical attraction.

I mean it is a plus and I'm not complaining.

But you're crazy if you think Sodapop Patrick Curtis is going to let his kid sister date his best buddy.

And you're even crazier if you think Ponyboy and Darry would be happy if I'm dating Steve Randle.

But none of that's gonna happen since Steve only sees me as his best buddy's kid sister.

I was so lost in my thoughts, i hadn't realized I was already at the DX, when I saw the large sign.

"Hey Ste-" I was cut off by the sound of a girl's laughter.

Steve had his body shifted onto his arm while he leaned against a car.

A girl in a pencil skirt and a leather jacket was touching his arm.

"Oh Stevie, you're so funny!" Her other hand was propping her up against the car.

I saw him smile at the compliment.
My eyes stung and my vision got blurry. Hot tears streamed down my face as I ran from them.

I stopped at the park only to catch my breath.

I slid down against the water fountain and cried even harder but I didn't make a sound.
Darry and I both do that. We've gotten pretty good at it. Especially me.

*STEVE'S POV*

I was talking to Cynthia, a greaser girl from school. She's always hanging around Soda and me.

We tried telling her we weren't interested but she didn't seem to catch on.

I tried making conversation with her.

All I did was make a small joke when she started laughing like an idiot.

I heard loud footsteps fade away. I saw Y/n's y/h/l hair behind following her.

I've liked her for a while but I didn't tell her anything since she's Soda's kid sister.

"I'll be right back. Hold on."

"Whatever." She rolled her eyes.

"Y'know what? Just leave."

"Bu-"

"Go." She scoffed and walked away.

I ran after Y/n. She had advanced a big deal in a few minutes. When I finally caught up to her, she was sitting against the fountain. She was crying even though she didn't make a sound.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothin." She wiped her eyes.

"No, just tell me."

"I said nothin, Steve!"

"Y/n!"

"Can't you just leave well enough alone?"

"Geez, you're definitely horseman's sister."

She stood up and started walking in the opposite direction from where I was standing.

*YOUR POV*

I couldn't deal with Steve seeing me cry. I'm the only girl in the gang, I can't be weak or soft, jeez I sound like Dallas.

"C'mon, Y/n, why won't you tell me? I don't like seeing you like this."

I turned around to face him. I wasn't crying anymore but my cheeks were stained.

"You seriously don't notice?" He shook his head.

"Notice what?"

"I like you! I have for a long time! But you're so wrapped up in other girls that you don't notice! You think it doesn't kill me when you're flirting with girls in front of me or when you have your arm around them?!" He starred at me for a few seconds. I started walking away, "Just what I thought would happen..."

"You like me?" I nodded slowly.

"Are you gonna stand there and say nothin? Aren't ya gonna tell me you like that greaser girl?"

"Cynthia? Nah, she's nothing compared to you. Only reason I kept goin out with those greaser girls was so I could get over you. Order of Soda."

"Soda?!"

"Said you weren't interested."

"I never said I was or wasn't interested. I could go for a cancer stick right now."

"Be my girl?"

"Yea...wanna go back to the house after your shift?" He wrapped his arms around my waist and put his head in the crook of my neck.

I wrapped my arms around his neck since I'm a few inches shorter than him.

"Yea, yknow this better than anything I coulda dreamed of," he whispered

A/n:
I've acquired a new fondness for Steve lol. He's too underrated. That's all I've had to say.
