The bustling noise of students rushing to class was overwhelming. I sighed and quickened my pace to get to the first period. This year's classes felt like a drag. The only seemingly interesting ones were advanced art and the yearbook committee. I've always loved art and photography, and sharing my perspective with others has fueled my dream to travel. The world is full of wonders, and people must see its beauty.
Sometimes, I wish I weren't the only person who could see these red strings connecting people. I've always wanted to do a photoshoot featuring individuals who have found their destined lovers. I could tie an actual string to their pinkies and capture the moment as they gaze lovingly at each other. It would make a perfect addition to my portfolio.
My train of thought was broken as some guy rushed into me, crashing me into the floor. Oh great. His eyes widened as he helped me up.
"Sorry." He quickly spoke as he glanced behind him, seemingly in a rush. I groaned and nodded as he sprinted off. Strange guy, but this school isn't known for its normality. Continuing onto my path, I made my way to the first period.
Throwing my backpack onto the floor next to the seat closest to the back, I let out another sigh. This school felt like a prison, a mind-controlled dystopia like a chip had been inserted into people's brains, and I was the only average person. Students crowded in as they took their seats, awaiting the teacher.
First period was chemistry, and honestly, it was too early for a science class. Doing labs and mixing chemicals was a recipe for disaster. However, seniors from last year said my teacher was lenient and chill, so I prayed that this class would be simple and easy. My teacher, Ms. Ortega, walked in and clapped to get the class's attention like we were in elementary. I couldn't help but laugh a little bit when the class did not stop with their constant chattering.
"Okay, class. Class? Class!" She exclaimed. Everyone stopped and stared at her for a second, bewildered by her sudden outburst.
"Now, I didn't want to be one of those teachers, but if this is how were going to behave all year long, then I think we need a bit of time. I like to say I'm a laid-back teacher, but I can be strict when the time comes." The class lets out a small groan as some students roll their eyes. I chuckled again, ready for a long ride.
After my third period in sociology had ended, the bell rang, signaling the start of lunch break. Eager to take a break from pop quizzes and lectures, I swiftly slung my backpack over my shoulder and hurried towards the exit. As I made my way through the bustling hallways of students pushing one another to get to their destination, I spotted an empty cafeteria.
Upon reaching the cafeteria, I scanned the menu and settled on a classic slice of pizza, a timeless choice that never failed to disappoint. Alongside the pizza, I picked up a somewhat lackluster assortment of cantaloupe, honeydew, and a water bottle. With my tray in hand, I sought out an empty table and settled in, distractedly staring at my phone as I attempted to drown the noise of meaningless conversation.
The atmosphere shifted as students gradually filled the once-empty tables, and the din of chatter and laughter filled the air. Amidst the commotion, a familiar voice caught my attention, drawing me out of my solitary reverie.
"Marina! Are you going to stare at your phone all school year?" I looked up and smiled at Elizabeth's glowing face. She smiled back and took a seat in front of me.
"Ideally, I would like to avoid as many people in this school as possible. Graduation is right around the corner, so I no longer have to see anyone here forever. Well, except for you, I guess." I joked. She lightly punched my arm and laughed.
"Seriously, you have to make more friends! It's your last year to make an impression on this school. Lighten up a bit and try to be more social. Maybe you can finally meet someone who tickles your fancy." Lizzie winked, and my eyes couldn't help but roll. No matter how often I told her there would be no one in this world for me, her optimistic attitude persisted, and she still tried to introduce me to new suitors. No guy or girl in this world is my perfect person.
